There are many terrible things about the UK at the moment but every time Partner and I consider leaving there is nowhere better to go. I love London and it is still the best city I have been to.
Brits take self-deprecation to an art form and malign actors/terrible people on the internet make up a lot of stupid bollocks about the city. Time to stand up for it a bit I reckon

Bat signal for @alixwzl.bsky.social
My Italian in laws have a bat living in their outside light. Apparently the bat has been roosting here for about a month. Is solitary living common in bats?

Also I thought you might enjoy the #proofofbat

Hey Jude. The most boring song the Beatles ever wrote.
Fuck your favourite song. Tell me your least favourite song. The one that makes you die inside the moment you hear the first 3 seconds.

900 trans+ people and allies showed up for yesterday’s mass lobby of Parliament, drawing attention to the cruel and unworkable guidance that the EHRC is pushing regarding toilets and changing rooms etc.
This beats the previous record for #LGBTQ lobbying set in the 1980s against Section 28.
History was made at the mass lobby for trans rights
An estimated 900 trans+ people and allies turned up at Westminster, making it the largest LGBTQIA+ lobby on record

9 years ago the NBA pulled the All-Star Game out of North Carolina because of their anti-trans Bathroom Law. The choice had massive public support and was applauded

Less than a decade later and half the country has those laws, including Congress itself, and barely anyone blinks

LESS THAN A DECADE
The public was 100% ready for trans rights just a few years ago.

What we’re seeing now is a massive shift in public opinion after a coordinated and expensive propaganda blitz, one that Dems happily ignored.

Trans rights aren’t new. We had them for years and everything was cool.
I just don't get it.

The United States is doing every single step one would need to do for a soft genocide.

And this congresswoman goes "maybe the public just isn't ready for trans rights, we have to consider that"

NO.

THE FUCK.

WE DO NOT.

Jon Pountney's photography of the South Wales Valleys is very good, with the feel of a British Joel Sternfeld. But he is often criticised for being "sentimental". What it means is that his subjects are not shown as objects of pity:

Pride month is not exactly going well in the UK. Birmingham Pride saw Peter Tatchell forcibly removed from the parade by police. Liverpool Pride is cancelled due to lack of financial support. The EHRC commission says that trans people have to accept less rights. They are fucking coming for us all.

17th May is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia.
The date commemorates the World Health Organisation’s decision in 1990 to remove homosexuality from its classification of diseases.

This. All the time this. The winner in this election is the oligarchy of which trump but birth and inclination is a part.
the trump campaign was literally bought and paid for by the wealthiest people on the planet — openly! — and dim-witted pundits are going on about how voters are tired of "elitist democrats"

Here is the headline which explains why Trump won. The richest people in the world benefit. Those disillusioned with electoral politics have a point as America has effectively been an oligarchy for the last decade or two. We can't vote the corporations out.

I had a difficult week lined up of caring for my elderly parents while my father has a knee replaced.

Now I have an even more difficult week of not being able to care for parents despite being in their home because I have COVID.

I'm pretty mad about it.

Partner and I adopted kittens. They are a source of great joy in my life but also of great anxiety. Now it's nearly 1am and I can hear them crashing around downstairs. Every bang makes me flinch. How does anyone relax when they love tiny whirlwinds?

Mark O'Connell: Would even paradise itself be worth the suffering of a single tortured child?
I am tempted to say that it is impossible to imagine the suffering of six-year-old Hind Rajab in her final hours. But I don’t know that that’s true. What’s true, perhaps, is that I can’t face imaginin...
