This is the part that our historical memory of decolonization always omits. It was never about the consciences of the colonizing countries being moved, an empire has no conscience. It was about them no longer having enough people to hold onto their colonies post-WW2

I'm not sure there's an industry with a worse set of incentives than journalism. Do it well you get bodyslammed by the cops until your paper gets chopped into dog food by private equity. Do it poorly and you get made the president of all news by billionaire eugenicists

A reminder that no matter how much money ICE has, they don't have enough people to disappear us all. We outnumber them by a lot, they know it, and they're really hoping we don't. The immediate consequences for opposing them are a lot less than the long term consequences of letting them loose

Tangentially related, but a year or so back my family did our annual rewatch of A Muppet Christmas Carol, and the Disney+ version had this whole song edited out. Like, a pretty major one that showed how Scrooge’s obsession with his work drove away the one person he loved when he was younger
