I was an outsider to journalism when I first became part of a "newsroom". So I was a little shocked to see good journalists working at our leftist alt-news outlet citing NYT and WaPo as good standards. Then I realized they just hadn't been exposed to much besides the NYT-FoxNews false dichotomy.

Our Healthcare System, a Reign of Terror
the question is not "was this act good?," the question is "why is your moral judgment only activated for certain kinds of victims?"

WHAT IS TO BE DONE?

An endless cycle of funding US hegemony/wars & then providing mutual aid to some of the victims is NOT efficient! Educate yourself about theory & organize in an efficient way that gives workers leverage.

On my phone made with blood minerals pulled from the earth by child slaves,
while my neighbors sleep on the cold ground and die from lack of medical care.

Biden pardons his son, while Leonard Peltier has been unjustly held by the US gov't in prison for 50 years, repeatedly denied parole. Peltier is the longest held political prisoner in the US—framed by the FBI to repress his leadership in the Indigenous liberation movement .

in New York City 1,950,000 people are at or below the poverty line and live on $20,340 dollars a year (for a single adult). probably half of them (or about a million people) live on less than or around 10k a year. just insane.

Yes! This is the obvious alternative explanation when some well-meaner starts explainering all the "wealth generated" by the "geniuses" of US industry post-WW2.

"You mean, after that moment when the US dressed itself in the dying husk of western European colonial exploitation of the global south??"

I like you already!

But I don't know that this is so cut and dry. Animals and plants are quite prone to selfish violence.

Yes, there's also cooperation in nature! Tho still often in service of meeting material needs. I wish humans were innately good, but I don't think it's true.

But of course. Since far Left analysis (materialist, feminist, anti-racist, anti-colonial, queer) is the most salient analysis of power structures humans have yet devised.

US Leftists particularly suffer this fate since US capitalism prefers any other part of the spectrum of perspectives (center left, center right, far right) to the far Left, and thus excludes those perspectives above all others.

Right on! And often people who are saying *But what about..." have been watching the bigger discourse, as driven by forces more powerful than they are, distraught over certain terrible under-covered concerns.

We've mastered suspending a life in a state of hellish prison, often for decades, instead of hellishly ending it.

Worrying about Whataboutism is making the claim that the person who brought up the topic gets to keep the conversation on that topic just because it was the first topic brought up.

Fine in a structured debate, totally irrational in a conversational space.

This is an especially valid argumentative mode when the whatabouter has less power than the initial statement maker. It still has that ad hominem quality in that it questions whether the initial statement maker is choosing what to focus the debate on poorly. But that can be quite useful to question!
