I don't know how to make this any more clear:
You can't substitute the experiences of a gay person who isn't transgender for the experiences of a trans person. I realize knowing someone who's gay is the closest personal reference point most folks have, but these are discrete identities.

I think both things are true. We must do much better within the Democratic Party to serve and protect all of our constituents, AND we must not let ourselves be balkanized.
