MRI safety guy here… it *is* vitally important to know what’s in / on someone before they even walk in the room. That said, it’s only movies & TV show histrionics where things get pulled out of people. Still plenty of opportunities for harm without bloody shrapnel flying, though.

As someone who has had multiple MRIs, you absolutely know what the techs are imaging before they put you in the machine, because if there is any sort of metal in the target area you *really* need to let them know beforehand since cleaning bloodstains out of the tube is NOT a good time

Taking the fear out of MRI safety queries: a modular educational intervention for the experts - Abdominal Radiology
Expanding imaging indications and increasing patient complexity have created an increasing burden on radiologists for MRI safety related concerns and queries, especially related to implantable devices and foreign bodies. We present a single institution experience identifying deficiencies in radiologist MRI safety education and the subsequent implementation of a module-based training system. Using a pre- and post- intervention analysis, we demonstrated that 39% of institutional radiologists did not feel comfortable making MRI safety related decisions. Following a structure modular educational intervention, 95% of participants reported increased confidence in making MRI safety related decisions. We hope our institutional experience can highlight the need for MRI safety education and serve as a framework for future implementations preventing exam delays, inappropriate cancelations, or adverse safety events.

After the fatal MRI accident in New York in July, I've been reaching out to NY state legislators about considering safety standards. Today I heard from the office of Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, Chair of the New York State Assembly's Health Committee, there's no interest in discussing MRI safety. 🫤
