2. In another response to post-confirmation hearing questions from Senate Commerce Committee members, Meyer avoids directly answering whether she would refuse to produce inaccurate statistics or data if asked by Trump or Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick:

Question 2: Yes or No: If you were asked to produce inaccurate statistics or data by the Secretary or the President, would you refuse?
Answer: The President and Secretary Lutnick would never ask me to produce inaccurate statistics or data. Additionally, the President and Secretary Lutnick have made clear their priority for Americans to have accuracy and integrity in statistics and data. If confirmed, I look forward to carrying out this shared commitment with the teams at BEA and the Census Bureau and I will comply with the law.

It was a blunt 31-page opinion issued by a judge Trump appointed to the bench in his first term in office declaring that Trump’s effort to federalize Oregon National Guard troops likely “exceeded his statutory authority” and likely violated the Tenth Amendment.

Law Dork on Saturday’s TRO:
Federal judge blocks Trump's National Guard mobilization in Oregon
"The President’s determination" that the Guard was needed "was simply untethered to the facts," Judge Karin Immergut, a Trump appointee, found. DOJ is appealing.

Hasty drafts in the midst of profoundly consequential litigation, and all in service of a monstrous program of mass deportation. I simply refuse to accept that's what the legal academy should be about.

This event was a highlight of last semester for me. MSU are great hosts and Quinn has a wonderful knack for identifying creative, engaged, and enthusiastic scholars! It was one of those events that leave you excited about your work. Highly recommend!

not just that he has no constitutional authority, there isn't even any particular legal or institutional mechanism by which the president can make anyone treat this as anything other than a weird advisory opinion.
joshtpm.bsky.social
This “explicit” is a weird editorial choice. The constitution gives the president no power over this at all. It’s not ambiguous.

I mean this with no disrespect, but we shouldn’t conflate the experiences of privileged voters with all voters. Many communities regularly face government led intimidation when it comes to civic engagement.
toreydolan.bsky.social
Voter protection efforts have been organizing against government led intimidation.

I know this because I’ve worked on those efforts and have worked against police presence outside/inside the polls in communities of color in 2018, 2020, 2022, and 2024.

I hate this framing from The New York Times. It assumes that Smithsonian exhibits are "divisive or ideologically driven." The White House hasn't provided a single example of such an exhibit. Even more laughable is the assumption that the Trump administration has any interest in historical accuracy.

I know it is a scary time for Democracy and Voting Rights, but Prof. Atiba Ellis @atibaellis.bsky.social encouraged me this past Spring at the MSU Democracy Works in Progress conference organized by @yeargain.bsky.social to continue thinking hopefully. This piece is a statement of hope.
