It is used as a cudgel by those that think they’re better than others because of their religion. Their god favors the ones that that pray with them. When and if it falls apart, they want us on our knees, so they can decide who is worthy to save.
"Religious Freedom" is GOP code for it's ok to use Christianity to deny people basic human rights, and to discriminate against those who do not look like them, worship like them, or live a lifestyle that they deem unacceptable.
