The Volvo commercial that says "you thought you were picking up one, but ended up picking up six" is quite unreal because you as a parent would've been notified by the parents of your daughter's friends.

This is very different from previous situations in which we believed that the government was a minority, but weren't able to prove it in polls. Maduro's tight grip on the military has prevented the democratic transition, but we can feel proud that we were brave enough to show up and vote for change.

So the Maduro government legally disabled her and any good candidate and flooded the elections with people that would be loyal to Maduro. She found one that wasn't and supported him. Then in 2024 he won by a landslide and everybody at the polls, including the military rank and file, saw the results.

One big reason MCM deserved the prize is that the democratic path was not favored by a part of the opposition leadership. Back in 2023, there was a current here in Venezuela that said "why go to elections if the government is going to steal them". Her reply was "let's prove that we are a majority".

If you won’t celebrate Maria Corina Machado’s Nobel Prize because you heard that she’s from the “Right”, please take my word that there has never been a thing as an elected Right-leaning government in Venezuela. All have offered subsidies, but they didn’t bankrupt the country and suppress democracy.
