4th editiin saw some new regiments added to their roster

In 2006, we were introduced to the Vostroyan Firstborn. Famous for their epic city fights during the Medusa V campaign.

The last metal model line released and one of the most creative.

These were painted around 2007. Not my finest work, but a lovely model line. GW showing people what can actually be achieved with a good paint job. WD 318 July 2006, an excellent magazine with some true Vostroyan love. Some iconic art work.

2000 marked a very special year for 40k. The Global Armageddon Campaign and yes, you are speaking to a veteran who fought and submitted results in that time.

Steel Legion raced across the wastes and rought bloody vegence upon the Orks.

I sadly sold my Legion officers to make rent in about 2010... I regret it bitterly, the one and only time I sold guard. 2 Praetorian heavy weapons squads and a 5 man Steel Legion command unit, with the cool sword pose officer. This Valhallan has proved his worth as replacement however. A newly painted army this year, but about half the infantry I've had since 2000 and we're veterans of the armageddon campaign. My cousins orks were an absolute beast but I won more than I lost, the secret is not to leave the Chimera until absolutely necessary. Don't push it. Yarrick was also really punchy for a guard model. But again dont throw him at Gaz... Look at that classic perfection. How can you not love the models and paint scheme? I know the Perry Twins did some excellent work on the guard throughout, but I believe this was their finest, such natural poses. And it was after Michael's accident too so even more impressive. The art work too went really hard...

Finished my Aquilons finally earlier tonight. These took a lot longer to do than I expected or wanted lol. Got a little frustrated at the end cause of all the detail I had to paint but hey i think they turned out alright 😅

During games day 1997 GW released one of the most iconic Guard Regiments of the entire line.

Praetorians!!!

Though limited edtion, they were well known for an outstanding battle report at Glazers Farm and the Big Toof River Display.

Yes I was too cowardly as a kid to try the colourful scheme... I do wonder if I should strip and repaint these at some point. Maybe.... but its tough to erase the past... I was gifted some fantastic Victoria Minis from a friend and gave them the proper look, so I do have a platoon in red at least. I never got this set, but my God I wanted it desperately. I do have most of the models, so no complaints this side. But if GW decided to reprint this and charge £250 I would buy it without hesitation. Even if I needed to sell a kidney. Look at it!!!! Im sure the veterans amongst you can name this battle report. I could take photos and upload the entire thing if anyone's interested. Its peak oldhammer. I never got to see this in person but I examined every image for hours. I remember a few years later WD released another guard diorama with dark eldar attacking a trench full of guard, I think mostly catachans. It was also something I looked at for hours, but the mag has been lost to time. Anyone know the name or have photos? Would love to see it again. Vague I know, but Im sure it exists....

One of the core 2nd edtion regiments with a Lawrence of Arabia vibe.

Its often forgotten that they later received a forgeworld update..
Sadly these three are all the tallarn in my entire collection. Honestly its a shame as they are a fantastic range with some real style... 2nd edtion artwork... 2nd edtion paint jobs on the Tallarn.

I do have a handful. I use them as Stormtroopers in my Valhallan army. Originally they were Veterans that would drop in from Valkyries, but then rules change and that doesn't fit as nicely.

They were actually the start of that army, so maybe my Valhallans are really the troops of my Vostroyan army.

So #Guardvember is entering its penultimate weekend.

Time to think about the factions evolution into 3rd edtion. We saw plastic Catachans, plastic Cadians, Praetorians (ok, released at the end of 2nd), Steel Legion, Tanith and Vostroyan.

What a time to be alive.

Some of the new options over 3rd. Don't forget those new Stormtrooper types... And Tanith obviously The various options by the early 2000s were really quite staggering. Sure some had been retired by then, like the Rough Trader stuff, the Beret Stormtroopers, the metal Catachans and Cadians... I think Kreig and Elysians were kicking around Forge World then too. But you had options... Guard came in many flavours and styles, metal or plastic... It was a vibe, a really cool vibe.
