Anyway I think the gay hockey show should always come out at the end of each year. A little helpful push to get through the fucking god-awful sludge of November/December, a little present for us in the darkest days just before we start up something new.

Did that thing where I was telling what I thought to be a light-hearted story rooted in my childhood and, based on the expressions and reactions of the people I was talking to, realized it was not in fact light-hearted. First of the year, I guess? Whoops.

I didn't make a holiday mix this year. When spouse asked why, my only real answer was that I always put those together in a spirit of hope for next year. While I keep trying, my hope for next year got real low the past couple of months. If I had made one, the key tracks would be, as always...

Whenever we're out of this shit the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau should be built into an absolutely nightmare bureaucratic goliath. Increase the original funding by a million times and hire thousands of staffers trying to fuck shit up for business.

Achievement unlocked: got asked for directions by a tourist. Unfortunate that they asked me, who was not helpful not out of malice but out of being bad at maps. But still!

At any given moment I'm equally likely to be the Schmidt or the Nick here, so. Happy liminal last few days to all, may your beans and/or bees be appropriately housed.
i can't hear any part of this song or see any mention of the person who sings it without imagining this. for those wondering which word schmidt mispronounces, it's 'beekeeping.' thank you for your time

Trying to decide if I think I'm going to read another book in the next 3 days, or if I should call the year at 212. It's a nice number, and I don't have anything out from the library at the moment.

But, I did get the newest Siken in the mail yesterday sooooo maybe I'll wait.

Sometimes I think I should compile a list of media that has either helped me face or made not feel alone (or both) about the whole religion thing. I use exvangelical sometimes but it's not a word I like. Religious trauma is legit but I have a hard time claiming it for myself personally. But, a list.

My kid is 12, which means sometimes we get to introduce her to an entirely new word or concept because she hears it for the first time.

Today, Spouse used "ditto" to mean "likewise," and she was baffled. Jer only knowledge of the word is, obviously, the Pokemon. I then, because I'm me, added...

I'm so mad, still, that Ali Larter turned out to be shitty. When I had figured out I was queer but hadn't yet looked at the gender stuff she was one of the Julia Stilesian spectrum of women I wanted to look like (yes I was anorexic at the time). I watched Drive Me Crazy (1999) about a hundred times.

Anyway say what you will about the gay hockey show but I knew the ending the whole time and still gasped in delight. There's something to that. And to not going for Shock! Twist! Surprise! Queer stories can be happy endings, can be sweet, can be hopeful and promising and joyful. It's allowed.

It is objectively wild to watch the blonde one from the gay hockey show talk as himself vs his character. His face is. A different shape? I think it's mostly his neck posture and his brow tension plus the mouth's loose vs clenched placement. But it's just a different person up there to me.

So I am going to say something about romance as a genre.

A lot of people think that romance is ignorable because <insert thing they think about romance> and romance authors don't count because <insert thing they think about romance>.

This thread is not about whether you have to like romance.

"Babe, you okay? You've been listening to the same Gang of Youths song on repeat for two hours." - the measure of when to check in with me is extremely specific. My spouse could give a TED Talk about it. (Girl Talk or rap on repeat just means I'm in the zone, other songs can go either way).

I understand and support Ao3 not showing you who is subscribed to you. I would love a way to tell whoever mine are that after more than a year of silence I'm very close to done with a fic that emerged like Athena, nearly fully-formed. And another on its heels. And to thank them for sticking around.
