She peeked under her tinfoil tiara, blew hair from her eyes & lifted her nose into the air. It smelt like salt, slippery, cleaned by cats & the singing of mermaids. She detached herself from the known land and hummed in reply to the portal. On the rocks, plastic bags billowed on gusty winds. #vss365

whenever Riley tried to reread it.
So Riley reread the rearranged relevance
till the relevance refused to remain relevant
and Riley refused to reread it again.

#vss365 Every town had a local kook. Ours was Staci. Always clad in her nightie and boots, rocking back and forth by the entrance until they brought her in for lunch or bed.
She'd mutter the strangest things. Nothing seemed #relevant. It all sounded like gibberish, until she said...

This Is Not a Poem About Love

Your voice skims my skin
like a cheap match struck in darkness
The cold room tilts, warm at the edges
My pulse trips over its own shadow
and the air tastes of copper warmed by fear
Even the silence leans closer
learning the shape
my name makes in your mouth

Guys, buying from small publishers and indie bookshops, instead of Amazon is the best way to support publishers, booksellers and authors and to keep small presses alive 👇
Please buy, too, from my lovely publisher @flyonthewallpress.bsky.social
Update: we have sold a total of eight books this month. "The books go to their readers, one by one, quickly, slowly, halfway around the world or halfway across the city. There is no supply chain, only the postal network, irregular events, direct sales to bookshops, and local distribution."
It may well be the case that small, independent presses are the lifeblood of literature, and a vital feature of our cultural landscape, providing an essential service in a complex ecosystem, like wrasses or shrimps. What is undeniably the case is that we have sold a total of five books this month.

I was looking forward to two hours of writing on the train back from Rome.
Apparently the Italian for “quiet carriage” is “live commentary on your journey, at full volume, to everyone you’ve ever met.”
Now I’m doing that English tutting thing which is completely untranslatable & utterly pointless.
