“Conservatives […] see trans people as an outgrowth of a too liberal society, they have a longstanding grudge with universities existing in the first place, and they see Democrats with a squishy spine when it comes to standing up for trans people in public.”

1. Over Thanksgiving, texts from Dem. Sen Ruben Gallego leaked where he repeats far-right talking points on masculinity, lamenting that Democratic women "look like men."

Using far-right gender-panic rhetoric will not ingratiate the Democratic Party towards men.

“Sex must be civilized and civilizing”

The Christian right is *really* aching to get into your bedroom. They’ve flooded the zone with pseudoscience and moral panics around porn, but their real missionary position is to control sexuality like the old Catholic Church.

They’re banning the dogs. They’re banning the cats.
They said they were banning "pornography." Now they're banning books about cats and dogs. At PEN America, we're fighting back. With your help this #GivingTuesday, we'll keep challenging the censors and fighting to keep books where they belong: in the hands of students. Donate now at: pen.org/GT25BS

Trans Panic? More Like Trans Apathetic
2025 shows trans rights aren't electoral poison. The truth? Most people just don't care that much.

Yeah this was clearly the completely intended outcome

This is extremely bad and worrisome for obvious reasons, but it's worth pointing out that this was obviously the student's goal

She knowingly wrote a garbage essay for her trans prof's class and when she obviously got a terrible grade stirred up a media storm

This was clearly the intended outcome
OU has put the professor here on administrative leave:

"the essay sucks ass" is no doubt true, couldn't be bothered to read it, but consider that the essay may have been written to receive an F in order to instigate a campaign against the trans TA. in any case it's not a great dunk because this isn't about the essay, it's about purging trans ppl

every trans person i see post about the OU suspension knows that the suspended target is trans & a grad student, & has an innate awareness that this is about purging trans employees. every cis person i see thinks the target is a rando professor & that this is about giving conservatives good grades

While not under consideration for this package, here are other recent bills that are potentially problematic:
-GUARD Act (S.3062): AV for chat-bots, bans minors from using chat-bots

ID'd the most problematic bills:
-RESET Act (doesn't mandate AV though)
-SCREEN Act (Broadest AV law)
-App Store Accountability Act (AV for App Stores)
-Sammy's Law (Surveillance on minors)
-Parents Over Platforms Act (AV for Apps)
-KOSA (especially if "Duty of Care" is maintained)

call your representatives and demand they oppose KOSA, Sammy's law and the App Store Accountability Act. I'm going to try my best to loom through the other bills to see what else needs to be targeted by us, but for now focus on those three!

On December 2nd, The House Energy and Commerce committee is about to have a hearing on 19 bills that could potentially censor the internet. KOSA is one of them. We can't let these bills pass. So call your members of congress and tell them to oppose them. (Including KOSA) #StopKOSA #SaveSpeech

Tell your lawmakers to oppose the Kids Online Safety Act- there are better ways to protect kids online without throwing other vulnerable people under the bus.

Politicians love to talk about "kids safety" until you ask them to do something that would actually keep kids safe like fund housing, healthcare, education, outdoor spaces, arts programs, etc.

That's because most of them use "safety" as a euphemism for surveillance, control and domination.

we're going to have to do a lot more work in the coming months to stop attemps to ban or criminalize the use of VPNs
Missouri's age verification law goes into effect today. 🚫

📈 Searches for VPNs are spiking in the state.

🔐 People know these laws put their privacy and sensitive data at risk. They find ways to get around bad laws, like using VPNs or going to non-compliant websites that don't check age.

As always: the best way to protect kids online is to pass strong legislation that protects EVERYONE from Big Tech's surveillance capitalist business model & breaks their monopolies so that people can have social media and tech tools that serve community needs. Nothing in this package looks like that

In seriousness, though, we're analyzing the new text but this package looks like a mess. The new KOSA text is confusing... the removal of the unworkable Duty of Care is positive, but other changes are just ... weird? Other bills in the package would mandate age verification and look disastrous.

KOSA is overstepping authority.

Ask why we are getting KOSA, but we still don't have many of the basic consumer and citizen protections that the EU offers.

What would've changed my life:

- access to food and electricity
- having a mother that cared
- teachers that could afford to care
