As ever, all the design choices are based around what helps the subject matter and images. It's been a wonderful process.

Really loved working with @marcwilson.co.uk on his new book The Edge of Ruin. And could not be happier with how it’s turned out — printed in five colours by Team Impression on Munken and Materica papers from GF Smith, and Swiss-bound in an oversized case.

I've received a small set of advance copies of ‘The Edge of Ruin’. Excited that I will have some copies to show at BOP Bristol this weekend.
Opening the box is so nerve racking, but I’m so happy with the job that the printers & binders have done. Exactly as myself and @wayneford.co.uk envisioned it.

“Avedon was at war with the cliches of portraiture, including the cliches of ageing, and anything that seemed either merely pious or too picturesque offended him. Contradiction was the engine of his art.” (Toni Morrison, writer, New York, 10 September 2003). www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...

Really enjoyed this evening’s talk from Dr Bronwen Colquhoun (Senior Curator for Photography, National Museum Cardiff), and Dr Tom Allbeson (Reader in Media & Photographic History at Cardiff University). On Picture Post—its history, influence and legacy—were both fascinating and thought-provoking.

I’ve long admired the pioneering Scottish photographer John Thomson (1837–1921), so it was a real treat to pause at lunchtime and catch Deborah Ireland’s engaging talk at the @bodleian.ox.ac.uk. John Thomson: Through Siam, Cambodia and China with a Camera.
A historical black-and-white photograph of two young Chinese girls. The older girl stands wearing a woven conical hat and loose traditional clothing, gazing directly at the camera, while the younger girl looks up at her, holding her arm. The glass plate negative is scratched and damaged, with areas of fading and light leaks visible. (Canton, Kwangtung province, China. John Thomson, 1869. Wellcome Collection. Couldn’t agree more. I carry out baseline surveys of birds, butterflies and other taxa on a private estate, and since the shoot was closed the environmental benefits have been remarkable. The whole practice is highly detrimental to the landscape — it’s time to end it.

Full (double set) of sheets for 'The Edge of Ruin'.
Litho printed from 13 plates.
This set, when folded, gathered, cut, section sewn and bound, will make the books 136 pages and cover.

I will try to bring a set with me next weekend to THE NORTHERN EYE 2025 at @orielcolwyn.bsky.social

Yesterday I spent the day in Leeds at my printers, Team Impression, passing the book on press.
5 hour drive there, 6 hours on press, 5 hour drive back - about 10 coffees!
They use a very special Hybrid UV litho print system that allows the inks to dry immediately on...
