Like many I am not satisfied with the current state of things. Not in my city, my country, the world.

It is easy to focus on the immediacy of this dissatisfaction, all the things that feel 'wrong'.

Worse, it is easy to allow that to define our reality, to focus only on pushback/1

If someone insists this was unintentional, they’re left with two troubling alternatives: either ICE is so reckless that it randomly stops and harasses U.S. citizens and demands proof of citizenship, or agents are engaging in illegal racial profiling. Neither explanation is acceptable.

After our last post, MAGA voices rushed to claim that Trump had nothing to do with the traffic stop involving Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar’s son, where federal agents demanded proof of his citizenship. Let’s be clear about why this is not a coincidence.

Build for cars, you get more driving. Build for transit or biking, and you get more riders.

Transportation investments shape how we travel and what we value. Focus on networks people actually want to use.

We don’t need to overthink induced demand to act on it
The concept of induced demand is now widely recognized in transportation. But we often treat it as a technical modeling issue rather than a basic principle of how people respond to the world around them. Build for cars, and you’ll get more driving; build for transit or biking, and you’ll get more of those too. Shifting the conversation in that direction can improve near-term decisions and strengthen communication between transportation professionals and the public.

I'm proud of my city!
Love seeing progress on the first building of transit oriented development at Lake Merritt BART!

This building will have 97 affordable homes for seniors, and the full project includes 557 homes and 500,000 square feet of commercial space.

Now that it's latke season, I need to post my sour cream hot take.

The proper utensil for serving sour cream is neither a spoon nor a fork, but a butter knife.

This is targeted state violence against the Somali community by the federal government.
Armed ICE agents trapped US citizens in a restaurant and demanded their papers. Federal agents walked into East African restaurants in Cedar-Riverside, MN. They closed and blocked the doors. Then they demanded to see everyone’s papers. Every person present was a US citizen.

What's clear to me in this discussion is that poverty always drains resources. Isn't it better to provide services upfront instead of just reacting to the predictable consequences of inaction?

And, perhaps naively, I don't see who'd want to live in a world that allows poverty.
We can end it, period
