I love the Wicklow Way. My favourite section is between Roundwood and Glenmalure. It takes No 3 on the countdown of best wild Irish walks.

In a brief break between snowstorms, I ventured out to check how frozen the lake was. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw this stunning heron land gracefully on the water’s edge. I waited for the ripples to settle, and it rewarded me with this perfect shot.

A Great Blue Heron perched still at the edge of a calm lake, creating a perfect mirror-like reflection in the water below. The bird’s intricate plumage, including its long gray feathers and white accents, is beautifully highlighted against a bright white sky. The stillness of the water enhances the symmetry, making the reflection appear almost identical to the bird above.

There is a raised sleeper boardwalk running through the foreground and middle of the photo, with bog and bog pools on either side. Everything is white because of frost, and the sun is obscured and distance is obscured by low cloud.

Dunlough, "Three Castle Head" here in West Cork. It's hard to photograph. The wall and towers protect the end of a headland with giant cliffs on either side. There's also a lake. Early, experimental dry stone job by Irish people in Norman times. #Ireland #Castle #Medieval #Gaelic #Norman #History
A wide image of the site. We can see three crumbling stone towers dotted along a curtain wall. The grassy, stony landscape rises to a high ridge behind them. One of the towers along the wall silhouetted against the sky, viewed from below and to the left. It is squat and boxy, the upper half of its front caved in. It straddles a grassy rise, the crumbling curtain wall extending from either side. Here we see the same boxy tower from the side, and another narrower tower peeking up from behind the hillside beyond. Beyond that, we can see the lake and its grassy shores. On the section of the wall right beside us we can see flowers growing from between the large stones. A view from one side of the headland down to the ocean. It is a massive drop down to jagged rocks. A mossy cliff rises up out of sight to the left.

Number 14 on our best walks list is the Dublin Mountain Way. At 42km it is an epic challenge. Many people stop at Jonny Foxes and don’t walk further. Possibly the best option.

I've just started the final year in my 5 year journal, a friend has just started on her 3rd year recording nature, I sold one yesterday to someone starting a new job who wants to be able to remember the things that seemed weird initially which will be normalised in a year's time.

The Irish/Gaeilge for “suddenly” is “go tobann”, a beautifully explosive phrase that feels lovely in the mouth and was overused in school writing compositions when I was a (rather dramatic) kid.
