On this episode Matt and special guest co-host Will Pfeifer (writer of CATWOMAN, HERO, AQUAMAN) try not to get caught by the chromium chain and sent to the House of Corrections as they discuss 1993's CHAIN GANG WAR #1. Despite never having read an issue until now, CHAIN GANG WAR has loomed inexplicably large over Matt's comic book reading life. And yet, he still can't figure out exactly why DC Comics decided to publish the series in the first place. But he also wants to read the other 11 issues. Matt's complicated. Will just learned that CHAIN GANG WAR exists (he was too busy reading hipster comics or "comix" in the 1990's) but he quickly develops an appreciation for its extensive usage of sound effects and the fashion style of one particular character. Also, ATTENTION WRITING NERDS: Will shares some fantastic insights on his writing process. Spoiler alert: More stick figures than you'd expect are involved.

Incredible to me that DC pros — including Carmine Infantino whose own art became so stylized later in his career — didn't appreciate Frank Robbins' art on Batman.
In the late 1960s, Robbins sought out work at DC Comics when his income from Johnny Hazard was shrinking due to the strip's dwindling circulation. Robbins wrote for Schwartz's The Flash, Batman, and Detective Comics, and in addition scripted many Robin, Batgirl, and Jason Bard backup stories in Detective. Robbins' first opportunity to do any art for DC came in Detective Comics #416 (Oct. 1971), "Man-Bat Madness!" His exaggerated and loose brushwork was far removed from the highly realistic and illustrative style of the very popular Neal Adams, and Robbins' comic-book art earned a great deal of scorn from the fans. Bob Rozakis expresses his opinion by saying, "I liked his writing but hated his artwork. I had at least one letter printed in which I..." "...said it looked like Batman had been doing a lube job on the Batmobile." Then-editorial director Carmine Infantino's feelings about Robbins' Batman art echoed the feelings of many of DC's readers: "I didn't like his artwork on Batman, and no one did. Except, you know who did? Julie [Schwartz] ... Julie loved it." Robbins soon left DC for Marvel Comics. He never wrote during his stint at Marvel, but he drew such titles as Captain America, The Invaders, Ghost Rider, and The Human Fly. After leaving comics in 1979, Robbins' fine art was exhibited in various museums and gal-leries. He died in 1994. - from The Batcave Companion
