The glaring conflicts of interest that @atg.wa.gov works under, in regards to public records, are unacceptable and must be addressed by #waleg immediately. The AG should be enforcing the PRA, but they are the defense attorneys for the agencies... that conflict MUST END.
Washington has a felony statute for destroying public records. Ep. 14 asks the obvious question: What if the
@atg.wa.gov simply chooses not to enforce it? Spoiler: you get retaliation, silence, and a system that protects the accused. #waleg tinyurl.com/mryv4dvj
Ep. 14 Get It Gone 2: The Bureaucracy Strikes Back
In our last episode, we exposed the alleged destruction and withholding of public records inside OMWBE. This case was documented through emails, chats, and timeline…

The Supreme Court, Presidency, Senate and two party system are all quite anti-democratic institutions as presently constructed.

Our institutions are not only incapable of preventing tyranny—they’re currently enabling it.

When democracy returns, we need to reform our political system.

Washington law doesn’t mince words.

RCW 40.16.010:
Anyone who willfully destroys or conceals a public record commits a Class C felony.

RCW 40.16.020:
A public officer who does it? Class B felony. #waleg
In our latest episode, we shine a light on an allegation of felony records destruction inside Washington’s Office of Minority & Women’s Business Enterprises (OMWBE). A staff member says they were told to delete Teams posts because of a public records request.

Yes, really. #waleg

In a democracy, the press – reporters – are the representatives of We, the People. That’s why our nation’s Founders protected the press in the First Amendment. When Trump attacks reporters, calling them “Piggy“ and threatening their networks, he is really attacking you and me.

To be fair, this isn’t just about @oicwa.bsky.social This culture of “put it where they won’t find it” was/is pervasive. As we say on the podcast “Get it gone” is like a mantra. If people don’t take transparency seriously and vote on it, they will lose it. #waleg #transparency
2 years into the 7 day auto-deletion of Teams chats and the Public Records Officer at @oicwa.bsky.social did not know how to hold those records. This points to pattern we discuss in Ep. 11 where agencies aren't dutifully searching all the places where records may exist. #waleg

7.5 months into what was a 6 month suspension/review of the auto-deletion of Washington’s public records, @governorferguson.bsky.social is silent about what’s happening. Not that it should be his decision alone, but he took it upon himself. This isn’t leadership. #waleg tinyurl.com/yc36auzy

There has been a deluge of news and analysis around @governorferguson.bsky.social increasing lack of transparency this week. He can’t govern like this. It’s not acceptable #waleg
Nearly 24 hours after a notice went out about Gov. Bob Ferguson going out of state for two weeks, we finally got a (vague) explanation about his plans.
Where is Gov. Bob Ferguson until Oct.9? Unclear yet because the press release sent out by his office at 6:41pm last night doesn’t say 🤔

Grateful the @seattletimes-rss.bsky.social published my op-ed today. On Feb 17, @governorferguson.bsky.social promised transparency and suspended the auto-deletion of Teams chats pending a 6-month review. 7+ months later, we’ve gotten silence. #waleg tinyurl.com/45tfxz3b
WA residents' right to know about deleted records is overdue | Op-Ed
The public deserves to know the results of a review of auto-deleted electronic chats, which was quietly erasing public records.

Hard to generate the words that describe how ingrained this culture of secrecy that has infected Washington state’s government is. @governorferguson.bsky.social has been silent for 7 months after starting 6 review of auto-deletions of public records. #waleg

When the law says the people, not politicians, get to decide what they should know, and @governorferguson.bsky.social still conducts a secret review of public record destruction… that’s not transparency. That’s the exact opposite. Listen to Ep. 4 of @thepropodcast.bsky.social #waleg #transparency
“The people, in delegating authority, do not give their public servants the right to decide what is good for the people to know and what is not good for them to know” The Public Records Act. Yet, @governorferguson.bsky.social has been conducting a secret review of auto-deletions? #waleg

The lead counsel of @wastateauditor.bsky.social accuses WaTech of a year long cover up, doesn’t tell anyone what that cover up was about, then tells agency staff they don’t owe or have to give the public an explanation?

His silence is complicity and he must resign. #waleg

I will raise my former colleague here and say WA’s legislative leaders are shameless. No other legislative body in the state could possibly get away with this. Secrecy for me, but not thee. #waleg
As a former #waleg staffer, this is disappointing.

The people of WA deserve better than this. The rules that the Legislature imposes on every other government in Washington State should be good enough for them also. We all deserve to know what happens behind the scenes as laws are drafted.

Lemme just say if President Bernie Sanders had unilaterally imposed, by executive fiat, hundreds of billions of new taxes, personally browbeat executives about job cuts and investments and then fired the head of BLS, the Chamber of Commerce and the business orgs would not be sitting idly by.
one thing that keeps happening is Trump taking major steps which impose large, often asymmetric costs on American business, and American business doing fucking nothing in response
Unquestionably the most dangerous and corrupt attack on the independence of US economic data in American history. Trump is firing the head of the BLS, a longtime civil servant confirmed 86-8 by the Senate, simply because the job numbers came in below his expectations today

My op-ed in the @seattletimes-rss.bsky.social asks a simple question. Why does #waleg insist it needs to be able to work in secret, when no other legislature in the state of Washington is afforded the same “privilege,” yet they still get the work done? www.seattletimes.com/opinion/wa-l...
