I like how your first paragraph could be a capsule review of any random TRON movie. Yes, even the first one, where it's Bridge's raw charisma, Wendy Carlos' score and the visuals doing all the heavy lifting.

Shout out to Corridor Crew for

There's an interesting comparison with Roger Moore's 1974 movie GOLD at the other end of his Bond career, which is maybe a bit subtler but also stronger in its political messaging. Still, Hyams got his 2010: THE YEAR WE MAKE CONTACT gig off the back of OUTLAND, so I can't slam it too hard.

There's just nothing on the narrative or thematic fronts that demands or depends upon setting it in space. Interestingly, this doesn't detract from the story, but all those long shots of elaborate models (especially the landing sequence) and matte paintings soak up time that could be used elsewhere

Watched OUTLAND, which I'm not convinced I've ever done properly before, and its biggest problem is that it's a fake SF movie: you could take out all the Jupiter-adjacent setting, repetitive explosive decompressions and video emails, then make the exact same movie and idk, maybe call it HIGH NOON...
Still from OUTLAND.. A grizzled Sean Connery in his space marshall outfit points a decidedly low-tech gun at someone out of shot.

Alternatively, make a science fiction movie already, PTA.
Ya boi Pynchon's GRAVITY'S RAINBOW is, you know, right there

Make a horror movie, PTA. It's time.

I have the non-plus MV7 and I love having the ability to use the USB connection with the 3.5mm monitoring at the same time as the XLR (with a suitable interface) to get a separate clean high quality recording you can run post on. The touch interface still sucks, tho

This week's episode of @hdtgm.bsky.social, in which Jake Johnson not just breaks, but totally annihilates format is among the funniest 70 minutes of anything I have ever listened to.

Speaking from the perspective of a person who isn't into the band Pavement, the semidocumentary film about the band Pavement doesn't really seem all that geared towards people who aren't into the band Pavement and/or getting them into the band Pavement.

Watched VICE IS BROKE, which:
a) wasn't worth all the fuss about MUBI not releasing it and then releasing it anyway
b) is rather rendered moot by the existence of DOCUMENTARY NOW!'s "DRONEZ: The Hunt for El Chingon"
c) is more embittered and self-indulgent than it is informative and insightful

Found an online enclave of people being upset with Emily Blunt for getting a boob job when they were actually looking at edited photos from the Venice premiere of THE SMASHING MACHINE which had taken the amount of sideboob she was actually showing and multiplied it by a factor of four or five

So, who’s got the cojones to fly out to the Riyadh Selliout Comedian Festival and heckle the shit out of each and every act? I mean, that material practically writes itself…

Possible downside: being hacked limb from limb by “security”.

Personally, I'd prefer to skip a couple of steps here.

So, you write a Harry Potter/Handmaid's Tale mashup fanfic that garners a huge following leading to it being snapped up by a traditional publisher, much to the excitement of your dedicated fanbase, but then you have to rewrite the whole thing to remove all the IP so it's now something different?

Another thing that’s been bugging me about ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER is that it goes to great lengths to illustrate how one character is a martial arts badass and then… just doesn’t do anything with that despite having a half-dozen places it would come in handy. Some might consider this poor writing
