"The biggest threats to butterflies (...) are habitat loss and degradation. The primary causes (...) are agricultural intensification, wetland drainage, land abandonment and overgrazing from livestock.
(...)
Over the last few decades, climate change has had a major impact on European butterflies".

The new European Butterfly Red List is published today, with worrying findings. Over 1/4 (28%) of Europe’s 442 species are threatened with extinction or are close to being so. The situation is far worse for our 148 endemic species, 40% are now threatened or nearly so www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?...

As a county bird recorder I can honestly say that the best and easiest way for you to make your birding count, is to upload them to either eBird or BirdTrack. Doing so contributes directly to #ornithology and bird #conservation at both local and national levels.

The remarkable rise of eBird – the world’s biggest citizen science project
In 2002, an online database was set up allowing birdwatchers to record their species observations. It is now a vast resource, shaping scientific research.

Well, it's official. After our paper last year (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....), the Slender-billed Curlew is officially declared Extinct today.

Scientists dream of describing new species, not writing their obituary and epitaph, knowing that they are gone forever #ornithology

Our National Parks are at risk. ⚠️

From the rugged Lakes to the sweeping South Downs, these landscapes define us and our future. They sustain wildlife, communities and our wellbeing - and they must be protected.

A future that puts them at risk isn't what anyone voted for.
A scenic view of a National Park landscape with a winding stone path leading through green hills and valleys under soft sunlight. In the centre of the image, bold black text on a red-and-black hazard-striped background reads: “DON’T WEAKEN NATIONAL PARK PROTECTIONS.” Below it, in white text, is the hashtag “#NationalParksMatter.”

Tonight, the Harvest Moon rises: the full moon closest to the autumn equinox. 🌕

October’s full moon is also named the Hunter’s Moon, once marking a time to gather food for winter.

It will be the first of three supermoons this year, glowing bigger & brighter.

Moonrise: 19:44*
A close-up of a glowing full Moon, filling the frame against the black night sky. Its surface is marked with craters and rugged textures. This is a supermoon, appearing larger and brighter than usual.

I haven’t seen a Great Orme Wryneck since Rob Sandham found one on September 26th, 2006. Today, 19 years later, I stumbled across one in exactly the same bush as the last one! Several Goldcrest and Coal Tits on the headland today too. Hopefully kick-starting a good autumn🤞 #ukbirding #birdingwales

As a result of the weather even the sea has been dire. A spell in August was OK, but since then it's been the worst I can remember.

After a month of Sept southerlies now we have westerlies for the foreseeable, which to be fair is the usual factory setting for autumn. No doubt it'll swing East on 15th November when it's good for nowt.

Now is the time to step up to the joint challenges of the climate and nature crises, not back pedal on progress.

The safety, security and prosperity of our wildlife and future generations is dependent on it.
