My wife @yaoanly.bsky.social recently passed away without pain and without fear. Now I am doing what I promised her: I am living on and start new things.

As an entomologist, AnLy's main achievement was the introduction of bio-control to scientists and farmers in Taiwan, after she founded Taiwan's first bio-control lab (Academia Sinica, Taipei) in the 1980s.

Australia has the shiniest ants.

anly.de is my homepage (an HTML hack by my husband) since a long time ago. It hasn't been updated since a dozen of years or so.

OTD in 1881, Charles Darwin published his last book, on earthworms.
It built on a lifelong interest in minds of non-human animals: “One alternative alone is left, namely, that worms, although standing low in the scale of organization, possess some degree of intelligence.”

I took the photo in Tokyo, Higashi-Yukigaya (2002). The nest fell on the ground. It perhaps was too heavy. From Japan Railway I learned, that such nests sometimes have to be removed from electrical installations to avoid power outages.

Warty Leaf Beetles (tribe Fulcidacini) are tiny insects (these together were 6-7 mm) that mimic caterpillar poop, aka frass. "Frass" is from the German "Fraß" which means animal food, like pig slop, so it is not a portmanteau of "from ass," but I think that's a good way to remember it. 🌿🐙 #insects

This little lady is the most stunning spider I've ever seen. She's an orbweaver, which means she makes the circular web that most people associate with spiders. There is not much info on the species, it was first described in 1895. #Arachtober
