Another great product launch from OpenAI!
ChatGPT’s new Atlas browser doesn’t just see what you read — it remembers it.

@eff.org’s Lena Cohen showed me it even logged “memories” of her looking for *abortion care* and her doctor’s name. Out-surveils even Chrome.

My @washingtonpost.com column: wapo.st/49bOcVC
Column | ChatGPT just came out with its own web browser. Use it with caution.
OpenAI’s Atlas promises AI-powered convenience. The price? Letting ChatGPT track and store “memories” of what you do online.

This circular dynamic is a huge part of what was going on in the Y2k tech bubble.

Good thing we aren’t also doing wildcat banking, destroying the SEC, allowing bucket shops to operate with abandon, ditching any semblance of consumer protection in the name of ‘free markets’… oh wait um
Been trying to explain why economy increasingly feels like it's running wholly on rich people passing each other same bag of money - innovation is stalled, unemployment is rising, but stock tickers are still somehow going up. This example captures the current state of our economy perfectly.

Great episode of the Organized Money podcast out today.
We talk to Herb Greenberg, a financial journalist and stock analyst, about the AI bubble, and why the financing is looking more like pre-financial crisis of 2008 rather than late-90s dot-com. Essential stuff.

A fact I think you have to be older to appreciate: Coreweave's biggest lender is the hedge fund Magnetar. I thought, "I KNOW that name from somewhere!"

They were the guys who structured the bulk of the CDOs that banks bought 2006-08, then used part of that money to buy swaps against the banks.

"Herb Greenberg, a longtime financial columnist, told us on our Organized Money podcast that companies like Nvidia are “round-tripping,” funding the companies that buy their GPU chips (essentially paying for their products themselves), and creating venture capital arms to finance the sector […]

"Incredibly, a signature villain of the 2008 financial crisis, the hedge fund Magnetar, is back as a top financier of CoreWeave, a data center operator that is losing money yet also funding other startups. The AI bubble is sometimes associated with the dot-com overbuild in the late 1990s, but […]

it remains completely insane to me that nobody seems to be mentioning that one of the new backers of OpenAI is Magnetar Capital, who A) backed CoreWeave's terrible loans and B) WERE A MAJOR PART OF THE GOD DAMN HOUSING CRISIS

The same hedge fund involved in inflating the housing bubble is involved in the AI bubble! Here's a transcript excerpt on Magnetar.

“What we’re really seeing is the final stages of an organized attempt from the 1970s onward to allow money to overwhelm democracy. The Lever’s Master Plan is an excellent podcast series on it. These massive slush funds could mean that voting really has become ornamental.”
Monopoly Round-Up: Is There a Silicon Valley Plan to Subvert Elections?
Crypto used endless spending to get rid of all political opposition. Now Mark Zuckerberg will do the same against those who want to regulate AI. Plus, a ruling on tariffs and a dentist revolt.

The whole point of democracy is so one person's derangement does not become everybody's problem. It's social hygiene. The fact the richest men in the West are a mix of grotty twelve year olds and deranged apocalypse fanatics is a problem, and we should be honest about it.

Yep. Anything to keep it going. Andreessen said that "any deceleration of AI will cost lives," and called slowing down AI "a form of murder." These billionaires are so entitled — and so terrified of their own inevitable deaths — that they frame any limits on their own power in apocalyptic terms.
"fearing or regulating it, or opposing technological progress, would hasten the coming of the Antichrist, Thiel said"

what the fuck
New argument against AI regulation just dropped. Checkmate, atheists.

Peter Thiel “lectured SF about the Antichrist. Then 'South Park' came for him.” In the episode, “Thiel downloads the student’s health data & uses facial recognition technology to track their movements…He gives Jesus, …the school’s guidance counselor (long story), a tour of his surveillance feeds.”
A tech mogul lectured SF about the Antichrist. Then 'South Park' came for him.
The episode pokes fun at the founder's Antichrist lectures in San Francisco.

This is the best political news I’ve seen in a very long time — so please pass it on👇

Each state can limit Citizens United in their own state & they don’t have to wait for other states to do it.
