Been trying to explain why economy increasingly feels like it's running wholly on rich people passing each other same bag of money - innovation is stalled, unemployment is rising, but stock tickers are still somehow going up. This example captures the current state of our economy perfectly.

A fact I think you have to be older to appreciate: Coreweave's biggest lender is the hedge fund Magnetar. I thought, "I KNOW that name from somewhere!"

They were the guys who structured the bulk of the CDOs that banks bought 2006-08, then used part of that money to buy swaps against the banks.

it remains completely insane to me that nobody seems to be mentioning that one of the new backers of OpenAI is Magnetar Capital, who A) backed CoreWeave's terrible loans and B) WERE A MAJOR PART OF THE GOD DAMN HOUSING CRISIS

OpenAI is close to finalizing a $40 billion funding round led by SoftBank Group Corp. — with investors including Magnetar Capital, Coatue Management, Founders Fund and Altimeter Capital Management in talks to participate, according to people familiar with the matter.
Magnetar Capital — an Evanston, Illinois-based hedge fund — could contribute up to $1 billion, according to multiple people, all of whom asked not to be identified because the information is private.
Representatives for OpenAI, Magnetar and Founders Fund declined to comment on the funding round. Coatue and Altimeter did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

2006–2007 involvement with CDOs

Magnetar Capital was actively involved in the CDO markets during the 2006–2007 period, when it invested in the equity of about $30 billion worth of them.[5] Partner David Snyderman told Derivatives Week at the time that Magnetar Capital was "excited about the opportunities in the mortgage derivatives market".[11] As a proposed means to hedge CDO investments, Goldman Sachs sent Magnetar Capital marketing information regarding "short bets" against the housing market via an asset-backed securities index (ABX).[12]

CDO investments are divided into risk-based tranches: The highest-risk slices offer the highest yield, whereas the safer pieces have lower yields.[5] With what some observers have referred to as the "Magnetar trade," Magnetar Capital took long positions in the highest risk slices of synthetic CDOs and hedged those positions by placing short bets on safer slices called mezzanine tranches via credit default swaps (which act similarly to an insurance policy) because Magnetar considered the former to be underpriced relative to the latter.[9][5] By establishing this arbitrage, Magnetar could profit from this relative mispricing regardless of how the overall housing market changed. When the market collapsed in 2007, Magnetar lost money on the riskiest slices it bought, but made much more from the hedges because of the relative mispricing that it had anticipated.[5] According to mortgage analysts, Magnetar Capital would have benefitted from its Magnetar trade regardless of whether the subprime market collapsed.[5]

ProPublica's coverage of the CDO industry, which won a Pulitzer Prize in 2011, made a number of allegations regarding Magnetar Capital's CDO investments, including that Magnetar Capital's trades in the CDO market helped worsen the financial crisis by helping to structure CDOs the company was planning to short (bet against).[13][14] Other claims made by the ProPublica series include: Magnetar Capital tried to influence CDO…

David: Here's, here's what's funny to me because, you know, Matt and I kind of come out of the financial crisis and there's this amazing housing bubble association here, because the first and largest institutional investor of CoreWeave is a company called Magnetar, and Magnetar was, if you know anything about the financial crisis, they were dead in the middle of that, too.
Matt: Magnetar, for those of you who don't know what it is. There's a hedge fund that should have been the star of the movie The Big Short, except they were actually engineering the crisis and they were not the naive people who just came across it.
They were working with Goldman Sachs primarily to kind of inflate the bubble. They were also shorting through these very obscured derivatives. This is this massive scandal. They took the bubble, which was probably a two $3 trillion bubble and turned it into a five or $6 trillion bubble. So it's a very important institution.
It is not an institution that most people know, but these are the most savvy, cynical people, some of the most savvy, cynical people on Wall Street.
David: It's just amazing that instead of, you know, slinking away. Uh, engaging in, uh, you know, derivatives, trading and, and, and what they did in the financial crisis. No, they came back and found another company, uh, to invest in. They're really smart. Yeah. You know, you don't in fact have to hand it to 'em.
