LE 7 MARS, AFFIRMONS NOTRE SOUTIEN AUX SCIENCES ET DÉFENDONS UN SAVOIR LIBRE ET ÉCLAIRÉ, SEUL REMPART CONTRE LA DÉSINFORMATION

L’université et la recherche sont aujourd’hui la cible d’attaques sans précédent aux États-Unis, menaçant l’un des piliers de la démocratie : la liberté académique et scientifique. Sous la pression de la nouvelle administration, les coupes budgétaires brutales affectent directement la société, notamment en matière de santé publique et d’environnement. La censure idéologique s’étend, retirant des informations scientifiques essentielles sur les inégalités sociales, la santé et la protection des milieux naturels. À cela s’ajoute une restriction de l’enseignement de l’évolution et des études de genre, couplée à des attaques contre l’intégrité des agences scientifiques. Enfin, les licenciements de jeunes scientifiques et l’interdiction de collaborations internationales se multiplient, aggravant ce tableau alarmant. Face à cette offensive obscurantiste, nos collègues américains se mobilisent. Ce sont avant tout les jeunes scientifiques qui portent ce mouvement, rappelant que la science est un commun de la connaissance et qu’elle est essentielle à une société démocratique, inclusive et éclairée. Des rassemblements sont prévus le 7 mars prochain, pour rappeler que produire, partager et rendre accessibles les connaissances scientifiques est crucial pour la société. En tant que défenseurs des liberté académique et scientifique, nous appelons solennellement l’ensemble des acteurs du savoir à se mobiliser pour défendre ces libertés, valeurs essentielles à nos démocraties.

Cet ensemble inclut évidemment les scientifiques ainsi que les organisations représentant la communauté académique (académies, institutions médicales, sociétés, savantes, syndicats, etc.), mais aussi les acteurs de la transmission : enseignants, étudiants, professeurs — de la maternelle à l’université -, médiateurs et journalistes scientifiques. Ensemble, nous voulons rappeler ‘importance des faits scientifiques, notamment pour la santé, la compréhension des inégalités sociales, les défis climatiques et la biodiversité. Ce qui se joue aujourd’hui aux États-Unis pourrait bien préfigurer ce qui nous attend si nous ne réagissons pas à temps. Il est donc urgent de réaffirmer le rôle fondamental des sciences comme moteur d’émancipation et de progrès social, et de renforcer la culture scientifique au sein de la société. L’Europe peut se ressaisir et surmonter son déclin scientifique, technique et économique, à condition de choisir l’investissement dans le savoir, la recherche et |’innovation. En s’appuyant sur l’héritage des Lumières, elle peut bâtir un avenir durable fondé sur la construction et la transmission des savoirs. Le 7 mars, mobilisons-nous, affirmons notre soutien aux sciences et défendons un savoir libre et éclairé, seul rempart contre l’obscurantisme et la désinformation. Nous appelons les scientifiques, citoyens et citoyennes à rejoindre le mouvement Stand Up for Science (standupforscience.fr) et à organiser des actions partout en France.
