i have just realized my true calling on this earth it is to make a popful mail ttrpg and also i have to do it using only period-appropriate roleplaying tech available to japanese rpg designers in the early 1990s
(gonna pin this so i don't accidentally forget my true calling on this earth)

we all have to pretend we're angry about winemoms marching with us because the only way centrists will support anything is if they think it made a leftist mad. of course internally we're all thinking "winemom x communist agitator yuri" but its just not practical to say it out loud at this juncture.

I think one of the saddest things about being a millennial is remembering a time when technology was advancing in a way that made life better and easier and more exciting instead of actively, intentionally worse

Bizarro Wuxtry's Devlin uncovered one of the first flyers I made for our first anime club back in the 80s in a lot of assorted fandom material found at the world famous J&J flea market
so for some bizarre combination of being hipster and poor my main music listening gets pumped through a forty year old solid state montgomery ward sound system whose capacitorss are fucked and whose speakers are likely torn and it's like having a free analog vinyl record filter on all my anime songs
i'm sorry to be the one who has to tell you this but the objectively correctest translation of 空気を読む is 'vibe check'
Remember all those old Qix clones where, as you capture more of the playing field, it progressively reveals more of the low-resolution pixel art of a scantily clad woman in the background?

There's a lot of potential in a setup like that to use play as a way to address the same kinds of issues that are looked at in critical theory and such (something that I'm very interested in). Really happy to see other people trying to apply Trammel's ideas to RPGs, that book was eye-opening for me!
I think the most common arrangement is to create complications through situation--the enemy army is invading, your daughter is being held hostage, and so on--but there's so much room open for making the magic circle create complications instead by using rules that confound "easy" solutions.
This is a really fruitful space for "maxim"-style rules--rules that tell the players things that _must be_ true in the fiction--and using that to explore alternative possibilities. "You cannot succeed at rescuing the princess" or "You won't be socially accepted no matter how successful you are" etc
I really like the framing of the magic circle "suspending" certain real-world rules, and the way that you (I think) start by looking at social rules that are seemingly innocuous or benign, or even potentially _positive_ ones. The complete opposite of what games as "violence simulators" usually do!

play is the oldest form of art we do not have to surrender it to capital

...but as long as the dominant opinion is that RPGs are effectively all about giving the players the "agency" to affect the course of events in play, RPGs will always be kneecapped when it comes to trying to tell stories about people and experiences that are defined by the _absence_ of agency.
The hyper-insistent discourse in RPG spaces around "agency" makes trying to talk about this sort of thing deeply unpopular, in my experience. Most people don't even understand what an alternative would be or why anyone would want to engage with it...
if play is a subject-object relationship as tremmell suggests in repairing play, does the person engaging with the game necessarily have to be the subject? i avoid the use of the word player because it implies subjectivity here. what happens when the game plays you?
Have you ever noticed how, despite Kei and Yuri constantly _talking_ about their MANY HOT BOYFRIENDS, we never actually meet any of them?
i bought a small bottle of christian brothers a few days ago, it's the first time i've had brandy in probably twenty years
and since unlike then i don't smoke anymore, i can actually appreciate the nose
