I want to give a shit about the character who died, not just how the main character feels. Even action shounen shows usually get this right. Demon Slayer excels at showing not only the heroes' perspectives but also the backstories of its villains, so you empathize with how they got there.

If you really want to see how a show can properly handle the death of a character who deserved none of it, I suggest watching Better Call Saul. The major death in the final season is harrowing.

Even as a series finale, it doesn't work for me. To this show, his wife was nothing more than a victim for Dexter to be sad about, instead of the wonderful, beloved person she was, who was killed in a horrifying and unjustified way. Don't fridge women for the main characters.

This may be controversial, but fridging Rita in the Dexter series was awful, and none of the content that followed her death was worth it. Without her, it becomes impossible to give a shit about Dexter's regular life.
