Reflecting back on how enjoyable it was to host the @igsoc.bsky.social Symposium here at @geogdurham.bsky.social. A big thank you to everyone who attended, presented and contributed to organisation! It was lovely to see so many friendly faces and to hear about some fantastic glaciological science! ❄️

If you’re in East Anglia (UK) and a bit of a Quaternary geek, check out “The Stone Index” by Mike Burgess, where he has compiled a incredible list of glacial erratics, standing stones and other “odd boulders” (1/1).

Very take it or leave it on the 4:30am start

But really excited to be back in Sheffield and just about ready to give a seminar on modelling subglacial hydrology in Finland and Greenland

I’m thrilled to bits to have been awarded the Richardson Medal by @igsoc.bsky.social. Thanks so much to all my wonderful colleagues and especially to those who nominated me! You’re all so kind. www.igsoc.org/about/awards...

At University of Cambridge, I was asked if I maintain a sense of optimism about climate change. My answer:

Yes, because unlike cancer, where we often don't know the cause and don't have a cure, we know exactly why global temperatures are rising and how to stop it. We just need the political will.

Back to civilisation after another great field campaign to Hofsjökull with the DRUMICE project. We managed to collect over 100km of radar lines over the 2 and a half day weather window. Will put together this quick little video. Thanks to NERC UK-Iceland collaboration grant for making this happen!

Closing the books on another fantastic EGU general assembly - what a week! Thanks to everyone for bringing your science to EGU, and to the conveners and other volunteers for organizing it all!
A view of Vienna at sunset, looking across the Donau from the 57th floor A crowded poster session. Two rows of poster boards and the space between packed with geoscientists A full oral session room, looking from the back of the room. Looking across many rows of chairs occupied by geoscientists towards a large screen at the front of the room

Still exploring old paperwork. Here’s a funny thing: apparently I published this paper in 1987, but forgot to add it to my CV so it was never mentioned in any job applications, promotions etc… a forgotten paper! Well, belatedly I’ve put it in the pile now! I wonder what else I did and then forgot.
Paper from The International Jornal of Remote Sensing that I missed of my CV for the last 38 years!

In light of high temperatures and recent collapses in the Alps, we're resharing our 2022 piece from geomorphologist Ludovic Ravanel on mountain stability in the Mont Blanc Massif.

Despite being 3 years old, it contains evergreen advice on warning signs of collapse and areas to avoid in the heat.

Mountain Stability in the Mont Blanc Massif -  Summer 2022 What follows is a summary of a discussion/Q&A that was organised by IFMGA guide Martin Elias on behalf of Chamonix Experience in early August...

The river level has already started to rise behind the dam in Blatten! 🌊

A lake is underway... 😨

To 'mitigate' flooding hazard in the valley, the Ferden dam lake, located 6 km downstream has been emptied.

SPEECHLESS BEFORE / AFTER #BLATTEN

The magnitude of destruction after the 3:24 pm collapse of Birch Glacier is immense! 😱

All the forest has been razed and the ice/wood/debris dammed the Lonza river 🌊

Some buildings of Blatten are buried 🏠
