Point of no return: academic #funding is at a tipping point. When the effort and money spent applying for grants equals or exceeds the funding awarded, the system stops serving science and starts draining it. Time to rethink how we fund #research.

A few days before Christmas and near record high temperatures are occurring around the North Pole in the #Arctic 🎅🥵

Line graph time series of daily Arctic temperatures north of 80°N latitude for every year from 1958 through 2025. There is a long-term warming trend for every day of the year and a clear seasonal cycle. 2025 is currently much warmer than average.

Wakame (Undaria pinnatifida) is on the IUCN's list of the 100 "world's worst" invasive species! It's a major threat, known for displacing native seaweeds & clogging coastal infrastructure.

The #GuardIAS project is modelling its spread via offshore wind farms.

Actual climate scientist here. 2.5C is on the optimistic end of the literature on current policy outcomes, which spans the range from 2.3C to 3C. I wrote a review of the literature on the subject earlier this year: journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

🌡️ November 2025 was the third-warmest November on record globally, keeping 2025 on track to be the second- or third-warmest year recorded. The global three-year average temperature for 2023–2025 will likely exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for the first time.

The red king crab can have a leg span of nearly 2 meters! It's a major threat, known for devastating seafloor ecosystems & spreading disease to native fish.

The striped eel catfish (Plotosus lineatus) was the first marine species regulated by the EU for being invasive!

It's known for being venomous & outcompeting native fish. The #GuardIAS project is setting up an early warning system to stop its spread.
