Additionally, some of NOAA's very high resolution convective-resolving models (designed specifically for this purpose) were the ones that best predicted this incipient disaster. Yet these very same models are on the chopping block this year with the proposed NOAA budget.

Predicting such storms is at the cutting edge of science right now, and the stakes are rising in a warming world in which they are intensifying. Yet this is precisely the kind of research that NOAA/NSF have funded in the U.S. over decades that is at imminent risk of disappearing.

Due to staffing issues, the Tucson NWS is no longer sending up a 12Z sounding. This sounding is a meteorologist's most important short-term monsoon forecasting tools. This data is also critical for the accurate weather modeling of monsoon thunderstorms.

This is my first attempt at the Squid and the Bat. The image uses mostly HII and OIII. However, the OIII data (the Squid part) was insufficient, and I'll have to get more next year. It is VERY dim. #astrophotography

From a net human impact perspective, the latest guidance for future TC Sara are concerning. Honduras has a rough history w/ hurricanes & the latest GFS shows a 5-day rainfall total of 1242 mm, or 48 inches, over parts of its north coast. This would have catastrophic consequences.
