On 25 April 1848, Captain Fitzjames wrote an addition to what is now known as the Victory Point Note. As per Captain Crozier's one-sentence contribution, they would start the next day for Back's Fish River. This is the last known written record of the Franklin Expedition. [RMG] #NavalHistory

One single (cis) person fighting for, consenting to, choosing to take medication daily for years, and later regretting a physical change is seen as a disaster

Thousands of trans teens being forced through the exact same physical change against their will, is seen as essential 'to ensure no regret'
the "oh what if they regret it" seems only to be applied to the side of this equation that protects cis lives

what about all the trans people who would've transitioned sooner given the chance? wonder why it is they don't count for shit on this hmmmm
You know i just really dont care if easy access to transition care means there will be people who “wrongly” transition and regret is. Like so what they should be free to be mistaken

Robert Anstruther Goodsir died OTD in 1895, aged 71. Much of his life is opaque. But what we /do/ have shows a brave, brilliant, compassionate man, who often put himself at great risk to help others.

He's also the best writer by far of all the people who searched for the #FranklinExpedition.

Dancing in the ballroom begins around 8PM; Davis writes, "Of course Captain Crozier and Miss Ross opened the ball with a quadrille; after that we had reels and country dances".

A few minutes before midnight, the ships' crews begin trying to outdo each other with noise—"blowing of horns, beating of gongs, squealing of pigs…and all kinds of diabolical music"—followed by both ships ringing forty-two bells at midnight.

We did it, Fitz! Well, I did, but none of it would've happened without James Fitzjames reigniting my passion for historical research. 2024 was certainly a special year! Discovered things & met such lovely people. In 2025 I'll finish writing the Fitzjames biography! Happy new year all! #NavalHistory

It's 179 years since John Torrington, stoker on HMS Terror, died on board his ship at Beechey Island in Nunavut.

This is the most legible of the three #FranklinExpedition gravemarkers now under the loving care of the Government of Nunavut’s Heritage Collections at Gatineau, QC.

John and Thomas Hartnell are two of the men on the Franklin Expedition who particularly interest me, so not only is this a fascinating piece of research, it’s a super-exciting one to me, too.
@illuminator.bsky.social & @finger-post.blog doing strong, strong work - as always
@illuminator.bsky.social wrapped up a years-long investigation into the original gravemarkers a few weeks ago. If you want to start your year with a long (c.20k words) and very detailed article about the history of these artefacts, here's the link!

Fun Arcane AND Franklin Expedition fact; the voice actor for Viktor, Harry Lloyd, is the great-great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens, the guy that slandered John Rae and the Inuit when they reported that the men of the Franklin Expedition resorted to cannibalism.

That the earliest Inuit "dictionaries" were essentially pocket guides on how to say "we are in search of two English ships" is so, so fascinating. Loved this presentation. #terrorcamp2024

for context NYC offered a $10k reward for any critical information about the homocide which is about the cost of a single 15 minute ambulance ride after UnitedHealthcare denies coverage bc the EMTs responding to the call were out of network
As police hunted for the missing gunman in a fatal “targeted attack” on the CEO of UnitedHealthcare in Manhattan on Wednesday morning, social media erupted with contempt for the health insurance industry he represented—and his company in particular:
Americans Have Little Sympathy for Murdered Health Insurance Exec
Americans expressed virtually no sympathy for the apparently targeted killing of UnitedHealthcare's CEO by mystery gunman in New York.
