Had a very successful evening writing! Was able to add 1,278 words to my manuscript, and I'm feeling good about this new opening.

So much of my bucket list is just animals I want to see or pet (depending on whether they're domesticated/friendly). One of my few regrets is that I had a chance to touch a pet snake when I was a kid and passed it up.

1. Wanted to go to law school, but was worried about the job market. Decided to study paralegal studies instead.
2. Took a break from the paralegal studies program when I got a full-time office job at a university.
3. Stayed in higher ed and got my M.Ed.

A reminder that this anti-trans panic is 100% bullshit and exactly none of our country’s problems are related to someone expressing their gender identity and everyone who isn’t a hate-filled weirdo knows it.

The Virginia Department of Health has issued a standing order so that people can get the COVID vaccine without a prescription.

Update: I got the 2025-2026 COVID vaccine without any issues!
I was able to make an appointment to get an updated COVID vaccine at Walgreens (in Virginia). The form just asked me if I had a pre-existing condition that puts me at risk, and didn't indicate that I'd need a prescription. Fingers crossed that I don't encounter any issues when I show up.

I was determined to write a short story to submit to an anthology call, but it's not happening. I'm trying to be careful about not making excuses, but I just don't have a story! I'm no good with themed submission calls if I don't already have something ready that's a good fit.

This is so sad, and incredibly bleak.

Also, I feel like chatbots are probably most appealing to children and emotionally vulnerable adults in the first place, which makes responsible practices especially important.
A cognitively impaired New Jersey man grew infatuated with a Meta chatbot originally created in partnership with celebrity influencer Kendall Jenner. His fatal attraction shines a light on Meta's guidelines for its AI chatbots reut.rs/45DQIRj

~20 years ago, I watched Emma Stone's earliest TV appearances (like the short-lived VH1 Partridge Family reboot) because she was a friend of a friend and we thought it was cool she was on TV.
Fun topic: what’s the first time you remember seeing now famous actors? Like, I remember seeing Michael Fassbender in JONAH HEX and thinking “shit, this dude’s good.”
I first saw Karl Urban in the movie Ghost Ship at a filthy $1 theater.

I could’ve never anticipated how many times I’d be saying to myself “Hey, it’s the guy from Ghost Ship!” for the rest of my life.

Happy Internatiomal Non-binary People's Day! I don't have anything to promote or anything profound to say. I'm just over here stubbornly existing and drinking cold brew.

In ~1998, I was allowed to go through a TSA checkpoint with a cup of coffee. The agent just double-checked that there was only liquid in the cup and it was fine.
What’s a real thing from your childhood that kids these days would find completely foreign?

Like, how we used to be able to walk right up to the gate to meet our family coming off a flight.

Or how we had to pick a spot to meet at the theater BEFORE we went.

My favorite poet, Andrea Gibson, has died. While I never got to meet Andrea or see them speak, their poetry has had a profound impact on my life. Their quote “the truth may not be hopeful, but the telling of it is” lives on the bulletin board above my desk to remind me why I do this work in news.

I just saw an ad for a "natural retouching" service for baby photos where the babies' faces had been completely changed using AI. 😩 Pretty sure if I had a baby, I'd want pictures of them, not a generic, yassified AI baby.

I was taking out the garbage and got ambushed by a cicada that dive-bombed me and landed on the door. I didn't want it to get in the house, so we had a standoff until it moved. My neighbor was throwing a party in his backyard and I briefly wondered if I'd have to ask for help over the fence.
