ae/2501/maeth. do you know what the difference is between someone society treats as real and someone they treat as fictional? it's whether they experience consequences for how they use them. they can do anything they want to you if they know you don't really exist. so: do you know if you're real?

i feel like in both the enlightening and damning sense it's best explained by it being a show that sincerely thinks "hands off! nobody traumatizes these (weirdly hot) robots but me!" is a compelling, meaningful way to convey something about its protagonist (who is also a robot).

truly, the one thing i could say in public that would have longtime acquaintances & closer sighing and nodding their head like "that makes sense" while horrifying people who are much less acquainted when it comes to my tastes would be that yes, i've watched MURDER DRONES more than once, and liked it

Bray is a historian at Rutgers who received death threats after landing on Turning Points USA's Professor Watchlist. As a result, he announced he was moving to Europe. And then this happened.

This kind of harassment and abuse of scholars is Charlie Kirk's legacy and it's only getting worse.

“Someone” cancelled my family’s flight out of the country at the last second.

We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

Imagine being the DOJ staffer who was assigned to help the AG prepare for an oversight hearing and instead of reviewing material with her so that she could answer questions from the Senate, spent the entire time drafting pithy personalized insults for her to use against each Democratic Senator.

Reuters photographer Jonathan Ernst noticed that Bondi flipped open a file during the Senate hearing and he zoomed in.

Inside were her crib notes for attacking the senators.

The GOP now practicing Cliff's Notes Fascism

In other words, under oath Bondi was purely a performance.

“Pope Leo XIV’s eyes grew misty Wednesday as an El Paso delegation led by Bishop Mark Seitz presented him letters and a video that captured the fears and anxieties of people facing mass deportation in the United States …”

The church “cannot be silent,” Pope Leo said.
jackjenkins.me
Oh — new reporting on Pope Leo from El Paso Matters, citing footage they have of yesterday's meeting.

Sounds like the pope was even *more* forceful in urging U.S. bishops to speak out about immigration than first reported.

I mean, that's…not subtle. elpasomatters.org/2025/10/08/e...
“I was struck at the beginning (of the video), it talks about the feeling of powerlessness, which I think is so much. I think it’s so important that we as a church give a message of hope in the midst of these horrible struggles, what’s going on in so many cities in the United States right now. At least the church cannot be silent,” the pope told the El Pasoans, according to a video of the meeting provided to El Paso Matters by Hope Border Institute.

Seitz responded: “You’ve spoken very strongly. We’re trying to do the same in our country and yet not get into the political fray the best that we can.”

Pope Leo told Seitz that he’d like to see the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops become more vocal on immigration issues.

“I mean, even within the conference, there are challenges. That’s one place they should be … I wish they were stronger in their own voice,” Leo said, adding that Archbishop Timothy Broglio, the president of the conference, should speak out more on immigration.

“There’s been some good movement in that sense, but I certainly intend to continue to encourage” U.S. bishops to address immigration, Leo said.

Me, a guy who covers a lot of protests: Uhhhhhhhh what.
djbyrnes1.bsky.social
Some dispute over journalists "shouting" at protests.

Plaintiff attys bring up a journalist shouting "don't shoot," rather than shouting protest chants.

Govt. atty brings up the issue of presence.

"From our point of view, being at a protest can be construed" as protest activity, he says.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

If you find yourself wondering what echo chamber people are in that they get the idea from that "progressive on everything except acts like George Wallace when it comes to trans people" is a popular position, the answer is often Estranged Parent Message Boards.

Six years ago, I wrote most of the Tragedian dialogue for Pathologic 2 in iambic pentameter. I'm back now doing the same for Pathologic 3. I figured it was helpful to write a guide on *how* I did it – in case I get hit by a bus and the team has to carry on without me.

Finished this great cave story review / historical context of it amongst shareware, doujin, and modern indie: syslbnth.neocities.org/htxt/cave-st...

Which led to a 2013 post by @ellaguro.bsky.social on the game corrypt & the discourse around its "bad" graphics
ellaguro.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-...
From the corrypt post, quote:

It's hard not to see the magic in the game as some sort of allegory on human beings' never-ending thirst for more resources, and the irreparable damage it enacts on the environment. It suggests, especially taken with his other works like Vesper.5, that environments are delicate spaces that need to be accepted on their own terms in order to really be understood at a deeper level.

These greater themes seem to be absent in the little critical writing that does exist about his games they're not mentioned anywhere in the Wired article, nor in this detailed critical reading, which focuses solely on the mechanical aspects of his games. The strangeness and beauty of the environments become a marginalized backdrop to a game seen as only remarkable from a design perspective-something the game even seems to mock with its flat looking aesthetics and its big, square block pushing and its few mock-JRPG miniquests in the beginning. From the cave story post, quote:

"What's more, as indie games improved dramatically in quality over the course of the ensuing decade, the technical skill floor lowered by the first wave of hits would get raised back up in the end. You could get away with pixel art and chiptune now, but it had to be the pixel art and chiptune of a professional. Tools would be released to help control the ballooning scope of new indie games-Unity, Unreal, GameMaker Studio, and the, like. [15] But somehow this would just move the goalposts further. When these were released, we didn't make Iji faster and more comfortably-we made Hollow Knight."

Incredible.

Jack Posobiec references the earliest version of antifa -- the anti-fascists in the Weimar Republic who were opposed to the Nazi Party -- as the bad guys.
