IMO this hasn't gotten enough attention: a recent memo at NIH announces that peer review will be devalued in determining which grants get funded, granting more power to political appointees to make decisions based on the admin's whims over scientific merit

The Mathematics of Internet Security. The Internet is a transformative network that is an integral part of our daily lives—but, unfortunately, its use involves many security challenges. With roots in abstract mathematics, some new and some very old, a tree of technologies (cryptosystems and authentication schemes) has grown to meet evolving threats. As users of the Internet, we routinely enjoy this tree’s fruits and may not appreciate their origins. The right side shows a diagram of a tree illustrating how math forms the basis of modern internet security technologies.

I wrote an entire article arguing the point made in this thread. It's great that Congress is funding the science agencies. But if they don't OMB-proof that funding, it won't help anybody.
