Are top-down feedback connections enough for robust vision?

We found ConvRNN with top-down feedback exhibiting OOD robustness only when trained with dropout, revealing a dual mechanism for robust sensory coding

After stretching a bit last year, this year the Nobel committee was determined to give the prize to the physicsiest physics that ever physicsed.

Regardless of AI's impact on science, it's concerning to see academics using provocative language such as “AI is research misconduct”

I feel it's unnecessarily polarizing, importing the current political tone into science and, ultimately, harming the scientific community than any technology itself

New preprint 🌟 Psychology is core to cognitive science, and so it is vital we preserve it from harmful frames. @irisvanrooij.bsky.social & I use our psych and computer science expertise to analyse and craft:

I've been arguing that #NeuroAI should model the brain in health *and* in disease -- very excited to share a first step from Melika Honarmand: inducing dyslexia in vision-language-models via targeted perturbations of visual-word-form units (analogous to human VWFA) 🧠🤖🧪 arxiv.org/abs/2509.24597

My test of any new AI video model is whether it can make an otter using wifi on an airplane

Here is Sora 2 doing a nature documentary... 1980s music video... a thriller... 50s low budget SciFi film... a safety video.. a film noir... anime... 90s video game cutscene... a French arthouse film

We propose a theory of how learning curriculum affects generalization through neural population dimensionality. Learning curriculum is a determining factor of neural dimensionality - where you start from determines where you end up.

The curriculum effect in visual learning: the role of readout dimensionality
Generalization of visual perceptual learning (VPL) to unseen conditions varies across tasks. Previous work suggests that training curriculum may be integral to generalization, yet a theoretical explan...

sorry for the confusion! I was trying to be sarcastic. My point wasn’t that AGI is around the corner, but that we’re getting closer to modeling human intelligence only because humans turn out to be "simpler" (or dumber 😅) in these setups than we thought.

Yeah, finally AI cracked the hallmark of human behavior: the noisy TV problem
agreco.bsky.social
Turns out humans are not better that simple RL agents guided by surprise/novelty-driven curiosity when facing noisy TV problems! 📺

AGI is closer than we think 😉

Are we moving toward a future where journals lose much of their importance, and most research is shared through open archives instead?
If yes, how long might it take — 10, 20, or 30 years?

Why are we still sending our work to Wiley and other publishing companies so that they can profit from it? There's so many better options now, for example: psychopen.eu/journals/

Super proud of this collaboration with rockstar Ryan Raut - born out of playing in the sandbox in our last year of grad school! Multi-scale brain activity can be predicted from a simple measure of arousal like pupil diameter. Out with linear causality, in with dynamic systems to explain neurobiology
Arousal as a universal embedding for spatiotemporal brain dynamics - Nature
Reframing of arousal as a latent dynamical system can reconstruct multidimensional measurements of large-scale spatiotemporal brain dynamics on the timescale of seconds in mice.
