🧵with some preliminary thoughts on what this means for US national security, with a side of IR theory.
Some thoughts on what Trump has done in Venezuela and what it might mean for US national security. Caveat: not a Latin America scholar so this is focused on US policy. Clearly huge consequences for Venezuela that others can address.

First, despite the buildup, I didn't think Trump would do it.

I got the best teaching evals of my career for a large course last semester— along with three teaching awards— after rebuilding my intro class around in-class handwritten essays. I simply do not believe that this is unsolvable or that students don't care about actually learning to do their work.
In only two years, ChatGPT has unraveled the entire academic project.

I get the desire to explain what the Trump administration is doing through rational political science, I really do. But such an approach misses a fundamental truth. danieldrezner.substack.com/p/there-are-...

Listen, I don't want to presume to be speaking for other people, but: If you are feeling overwhelmed by the stupidity, the chaos, the vile fanaticism, the immeasurable damage and suffering, the specter of global turmoil, just know that I am feeling that too. Because this is just an insane situation.
“While this is a tragedy, it’s also the new reality. We must respond with both purpose and force.”

This is obviously the correct – and only viable – response, and it is based on a clear-sighted analysis of what is happening. But what an absolute disaster this all is, on a global scale.
Carney: The system of global trade anchored on the United States.. is over. Our old relationship of steadily deepening integration with the United States is over. The 80 year period when the United States embraced the mantle of economic leadership… is over.

I don't expect any of our major media outlets to acknowledge this outright, but this is the thing: These aren't 'steep' tariffs, these are _insane_ tariffs. These are 'nobody in the White House understands decimal points' numbers. It speaks to total economic illiteracy _throughout the White House_.
There's no question that today's tariff announcement will give the United States the highest tariff rates of any industrialized country. And it's not even close.

It’s a pretty strong declaration. www.tufts.edu/president/sp...

As a foreign national, I will say that living and working in a country in which those fundamental protections are suspended for me, or at the very least conditional on not upsetting the regime in any way, is utterly untenable.

From the Trumpist perspective, that, of course, is the intended effect.
Freedom of speech and the right of due process - unless you "create a ruckus," then you'll be disappeared by masked agents of the state.

Fundamental constitutional protections - officially suspended for foreign nationals. They'll remain in place for US citizens until the regime decides otherwise.
Marco Rubio on Rumeysa Ozturk: "We revoked her visa ... once you've lost your visa, you're no longer legally in the United States ... if you come into the US as a visitor and create a ruckus for us, we don't want it. We don't want it in our country. Go back and do it in your country."

We are only two months into the Trumpist regime, and already, life and work in the United States has become a dangerous proposition for any foreign nationals, and utterly untenable depending on where they are from, who they are, or what they do. Which is, of course, exactly what the Trumpists want.
Chilling report from Brown University.

Administration advises all foreign students, staff, and faculty to postpone or reconsider (ie cancel) international travel, due to federal government's crackdown on universities.

Brown also warns against *domestic travel* -since it's unclear what ICE will do.
