Are we ‘dumbing down’ teaching? Sam Gibbs argues that if we want critically engaged young people, then we need to divert from our current path and put intellectualism at the heart of our profession
How we dumbed down teaching - and what we must do to fix it
Over the past decade, teaching has been pushed towards a prescriptive model that reduces intellectual curiosity and overlooks essential classroom engagement, argues Sam Gibbs

Read this article and realise that Trump hasn’t done anything yet…
Remember that on April 20th Donald Trump receives his fake "report" from Hegseth and Gabbard on whether he should invoke the Insurrection Act over immigration and terrorism, which fait accompli could put us under martial law by May, at which point Trump would expand his new slave trade significantly
Will Trump Invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 Next?
Allow me to invite you down this rabbit hole of stupidity.

"The language that is being used has a specific resonance, which, historically, has been used to change regime type. It is important that the rights of human beings were violated. It is important that the rule of law was ignored. It is important that the executive is trying to define reality."
Language used by individuals associated with the federal government who deported people without trial or due process to a concentration camp in El Salvador, defying a court order, has a specific resonance that, historically, has been used to change regime type.

Fascism is back, folks…
NEW: White House says the arrest and deportation of student activist & legal US resident, Mahmoud Khalil, is a blueprint for more.

The final line here is chilling. The White House specifically says Khalil was not breaking the law.

No evidence, no due process, no crime. He was just disappeared.

Worth stating simply what’s happening. An American government is launching a full-scope political & economic assault on an ally repelling an ongoing invasion to compel them to terminate martial law, topple their president, hand over minerals to America & accept a ceasefire w/out security guarantees.

Free speech "is in retreat" in Britain, says JD Vance, who is part of a Government which is now targeting critical news organisations with politically-motivated investigations, while banning others from the White House for the crime of referring to the Gulf of Mexico by its actual name

Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers.

This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.

Auschwitz took time.

For more than ten years I’ve kept loose batteries in a metal tin, and yesterday evening I opened it and two of them were red hot, and I thought oh dear, that’s not good, and I looked up whether you should keep batteries in a metal tin, and let’s say I’m glad that I’m not long dead in a house fire.

Terrific article by @docrussjackson.bsky.social analysing Farage's rhetorical tactics on Question Time. Labour need to counter the rhetoric of the right on immigration, not pander to Reform and the tabloids.
“My 2023 open letter to the BBC about Question Time, read by more than 300,000 people in 144 countries, was widely reported in the media. It even informed questions posed to the BBC’s director general Tim Davie at a parliamentary select committee.”

Difficult to describe what a dangerous moment we are in.

The owner of Twitter/richest man in the world/closest adviser to the next US president is promoting a far-right Tommy Robinson (!) documentary to his 200 million followers.

This is the mainstreaming of violent, Islamophobic fascism.
