in 2007, steve jobs promised an all-in-one device that would serve as a cell phone, an ipod, and an internet device. what he introduced next was the Mac Pack: a 135-pound backpack with a pull-over steel dome housing a computer monitor, a 14-foot aerial antenna, and a 900-foot retractable power cable

The @nytimes.com continues to report with all the credulity of a seven-year-old on Christmas morning dutifully announcing that Santa’s reindeer ate the carrots that were left out.

Over the past week, ICE and border patrol agents have clashed with Chicago residents, and federal guard troops arriving in the city might inflame tensions further. Our reporters describe the situation on the ground.

Back in the day people in cars would look at people walking with condescension and pity. Now it's the other way around.

We have HUGE back-ups on the Circ headed for the Mackay Bridge, HFX BOUND.

The circ is backed up past the Big Mall in Dartmouth...

Pretty sure it's because of the collision on Barrington - because traffic is slow coming off the MacKay, headed for Barrington #HFXTraffic

We've got a collision on Barrington Street.

That's near the intersection with Devonshire, near the HFX Shipyard.

Traffic is getting backed up between there and the MacKay Bridge #HFXTraffic

I liked Alex's joke about adding the keyboardist: "it frees us up to do some of those dance numbers we've been thinking of"

Their explainer video was really well done. I think we'd all like to see them out there doing what they're good at, and they're very much still keeping Neil in their thoughts. I could see them renaming the band, but then again it was already Rush before Neil "the new guy" joined

So I guess in 2025 big inflatable costumes are now symbols of The Resistance.

Streets are still closed off in front of the Portland ICE facility at 8:30pm. Protesters have gathered on a side street. Dance party in progress.

I haven't been following the Jays-Yankees series much tbh but every morning I wake up to some great content on here from y'all.

Yankees fans eyes rolling completely back and turning black, heads tilting backwards at an impossible angle, and their jaws opening and opening horribly like a shark's as they all emit the PC Richard Whistle Sound as one.

I'm liking that I've heard *no* backlash about her being a "woke" diversity hire and how dare they besmirch the memory of The Professor.

This could be major Culture War bait, especially considering how many folks discovered Ayn Rand via Rush's early stuff.

But then again, it's obvious she's good.

I'm amazed none of the models have included special override instructions to make a really good svg of a pelican riding a bicycle

The pedestrian-hostile clown show continues on Summer Street. Sidewalks blocked on BOTH sides. At least everyone can go through the Public Gardens, but still c'mon nobody is thinking this through are they?

Damn. This is amazing. £325 per week, paid monthly, for 3 years - and the result was a profit for the Irish economy:

Post from Threads user rodneyowl: "Ireland has declared the Basic Income for Artists scheme permanent. This will be officially announced in tomorrow’s budget. Details to follow. Congratulations to all who fought for it and the present and future artists of all sorts in Ireland. That includes me 👌We’re just comin to the end of a 3 year pilot scheme. It’s been a roaring success. For every €1 paid out to the 2000 participants, the government got €1.46 back. Can’t argue with that. Other countries are already taking note."

On the good news front, California has recommitted to carbon pricing. The California-Québec (soon to include Washington, probably) carbon market remains a really positive program that will, hopefully, entice in new states.

California passed a huge climate package last month, w/ a big effort to weave in affordability. It's wonky but important stuff, and I broke it all down for you:
- Cap & invest extension / rebrand
- transmission accelerator
- permission to join a Western RTO!

So the credits needle drop on the full-on "Alien" tribute episode of #alienearth is "Cherub Rock" - I have the vaguest sense that I might possibly maybe be being pandered to just slightly.

Watching the already famous episode 5 of Alien Earth, basically a clever remix of the original Alien movie. Lots to appreciate, especially the production design - but I especially like that they came up with a reason for those random chains hanging from distant ceilings from the original movie

They've been talking up agents and MCP for ages now and the dirty secret is hallucinations mean you can't "fire and forget" AI as it'll be amazing 80% of the time but that other 20% will wreck everything. Also, massive security vulnerabilities with prompt injection. They're still gonna try though!

Catching up on Alien Earth and they just confused a Clarke quote for Asimov. Don't know if that's just a mistake or they're going to run with it as a plot point like the Byron/Shelley mistake in Alien Covenant. No spoilers kthxbye
