One of the things I took away from the 60s and Richard Nixon, first mentioned by Hunter Thompson, but I believe to be true, is the fact that we believed, at time, that all our protesting, marching and sign waving was futile and pointless when in fact, it drove Richard Nixon to alcohol fueled madness

Everyone is trying to have a normal Saturday night and the president's top advisor is on X announcing that civil war is necessary
@StephenM on X: Legal insurrection. The President is the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, not an Oregon judge. Portland and Oregon law enforcement, at the direction of local leaders, have refused to aid ICE officers facing relentless terrorist assault and threats to life. (There are more local law enforcement officers in Oregon than there are guns and badges in the FBI nationwide). This is an organized terrorist attack on the federal government and its officers, and the deployment of troops is an absolute necessity to defend our personnel, our laws, our government, public order and the Republic itself.

Man, it is just intolerable. Every day a new outrage. I don’t know how this ends.

Yeah, politics is not the lecture hall, and rolling up to the protest with reviewer #2 and a bibliography seems unlikely to get results.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sentenced to 4 years and 2 months in prison in case involving sex workers, violence and ‘freak-offs’.

I greatly appreciate how you explain the rationale behind ideas other people would present as simple rules. Understanding these things has really helped me improve my wardrobe.

You’re telling me sucking up to fascists while they go after other groups doesn’t work? And then they just come after you? Damn, somebody should write a poem about it.

I'll take the bullheaded, deeply flawed, 1990s quest for authenticity and cultivating a core which you shouldn't sell out over this any day. Any day.

Which one is your favorite? I like 94, but I have a soft spot for Viral.

My most conservative belief is that the Amtrak quiet car is a sacred space and people who talk in it represent a breakdown of social order.

When I was younger, and in a different line of work, I thought it was sophisticated to talk about all the ins and outs that led political actors to do what they do. Now that I’m older things are simpler: if I like something I say it’s good, and if I think something is bad I say so. It’s liberating.

Can’t emphasize how good it is to have moral clarity on issues that are clearly night and day. Some stuff? Complicated. But the stuff that isn’t? Gosh. It’s nice to not clown yourself, to look back and know you weren’t doing genocide apologia.

Our system suffers under parties that are more or less ideologically sorted. True in the mid 19th century and now.
albemuth.bsky.social
They are just lying. I know some people were flatly incredulous that the “anti-ICE” inscription in TX was faked, but things like this make trusting federal law enforcement shall we say challenging.

You don’t just join a union like joining the ACLU. The greatest predictor of union membership is taking a job in a unionized workplace. This is not generally a decision driven by ideological considerations.
albemuth.bsky.social
Yeah, that and other demographic factors (race and gender especially) account for most of the differences. That said, my understanding is even accounting for that, union workers support democrats at greater rates than comparable workers. That’s apart from the other political benefits of unionizing.
albemuth.bsky.social
Unions are more or less the only aspect of civil society not captured by the right, and union members go Democratic 59% to 39%. This compares to 48% D to 49% R for non-union voters. If for no other reason, Democrats should support unionization because it benefits them.
Partisanship by family income, home ownership, union membership and veteran status
Democrats have an edge among registered voters in the lowest and highest income tiers, union members and voters who rent their home.
