Very pleased to see our study that formally quantifies the society of zebra finches. They have different types of relationships, and these form tiers, but they do not form a multilevel society.

This was a very nice collaboration with great colleagues.

#bowerbirds are the only birds that build structures used specifically for courtship. But why and how did this remarkable ability evolve?

We discuss some possibilities in our new review in Emu - Austral Ornithology!

‘Turkestan Shrike, adult male’

acrylic, 13 x 18 cms.

Turkestan Shrike, also known as Red-tailed Shrike, is a very rare visitor from Central Asia to the UK. Along with the closely related Daurian Shrike it was once considered one of the sub-species of Isabelline Shrike.

A new paper I'm on is out today! Primarily the work of @evodevoba.bsky.social, we found that distinguishing skull features among chicken-like and duck-like birds do not always arise later than shared similarities during embryonic development. evodevojournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.... 🪶🧪

Hey, we all like fireflies, right? Of course we do! So please: LEAVE YOUR LEAVES! Firefly larvae need the protection that fallen leaves provide to complete their life cycle. Even just allowing part of your yard to be covered with leaves can help the arthropods/invertebrates/microfauna living there.
