"There just isn’t enough time. There’s only what we manage to make of it—what we build, what we protect, what we remember to carry to the car. The gas mask. The snacks. The question we forgot to ask. The name of the person taken." My latest.

Can we get the word around for more donations to go to BlackSky so there’s funding for the infrastructure that can bring Link back?

From my understanding:

Relays are costly and expensive. Anyone feel free to chime in. Bluesky relays is what has him banned.

Debt Collective, the nation’s first union of debtors, has a long history of participating in the private sector to purchase student loan debt. In 2023, the Debt Collective’s Rolling Jubilee Fund purchased nearly $10M of student loan debt directly from Morehouse College.

📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

As we enter “week 2” of the shutdown, remember: the administration has shut the government down for months — ending USAID, cutting grants, freezing the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau & dropping its lawsuits vs big finance: bsky.app/profile/fedw...

The Trump administration has been shutting down the government & slashing public services for months. 12% of the federal workforce has already been cut. This is not about numbers. It’s about power. But together, we will win. Read: prospect.org/politics/202... #SaveOurServices #SupportFederalWorkers

On Weds Oct 1, federal workers including Paul Osadebe joined @fairshareamerica.bsky.social for a rally to tell the country “it’s not business as usual when people’s rights are being taken from them.”

Also on 9/29:

HUD tries to fire two brave fair lending attorneys, Paul Osadebe and Palmer Heenan, who blew the whistle on the agency’s attempted shuttering of the division tasked with fighting discrimination in lending:

JD Vance’s demand for “gratitude” reminds me of @joyannreid.bsky.social’s passage in “Medgar & Myrlie” on reactions to the 1963 clemency of Clyde Kennard:

“The white southern press typically presented black life as a constant exercise in gratitude at the undeserved blessings of white beneficence”

Macron remarks are notable- some quotes: "We have been incredibly naive in entrusting our democratic space to social networks that are controlled either by large American entrepreneurs or large Chinese companies, whose interests are not at all the survival or proper functioning of our democracies."

I really enjoyed this essay by Audrey Borowski on Günther Anders & his prescience on the impact of technology.

“The atom bomb…illuminates that the more ‘our’ technological power grows, the smaller we become… singled out as being expendable and inadequate.”

aeon.co/essays/gunth...
Excerpt from “Philosopher of the apocalypse” by Audrey Borowski about Gunter Anders, aeon NEWSLETTER

“in this regard, which Anders hoped to make 'visible for the first time', lay in the transformation of the human condition, a transformation that had become as naturalised and imperceptible as it was destructive. 'The atom bomb,' he argued, was 'thus the ultimate emblem of an unearthly, unsettling and haunting force channelled by complex technological objects: it illuminates that the more "our" technological power grows, the smaller we become; the more unconditional and unlimited the capability of machines, the more conditional our existence; the more machines connect us by virtue of their very existence, the more we are also singled out as being expendable and inadequate!'” Excerpt from “Philosopher of the apocalypse” by Audrey Borowski about Gunter Anders:

“‘Man is probably not a machine, but he behaves as such in a situation where the machines im se his operating rules. Indeed, the progress of technology should not be understood as necessarily being the progress of mankind: far from it, they are not accompanied by a progress of thought, reflection and responsibility, since they eliminate their intervention and even often make them impossible.’ [end quote by Gunter Anders.]

Crucially, man increasingly found himself enlisted in the production of his own disappearance in the most natural manner possible.”

You can see how their cameramen document their violence. This is about content creation. For the last one, I had to search my files for a photo of this moment that didn't include the face of a pained or screaming protester, but for clarity: those are tackled human beings on the ground.
DHS cameramen film their approach. DHS cameramen film their leader. DHS cameramen film their assault on tackled protesters.

They were human props in fascist propaganda. The state of Illinois should play no role in these theatrics, and we certainly shouldn't prosecute protesters who did nothing wrong. Let ICE spin its own BS cover story. We don't have to lend them IL courts for that.

As I mentioned earlier, I can't show you all of my pictures because some include people's faces—but the pain and terror on some of those faces would bring tears to your eyes. These are people of conscience who had no chance to process the violence that fell down on them.
