🌍 Our new review shows how:
(1) Climate shocks hit food, water + health systems
(2) All forms of malnutrition are at risk
(3) Near-term events + long-term warming both drive risks
(4) Building resilience through food, social + nutrition systems is urgent. 🔗 shorturl.at/WmZki

Armstrong Hall at Columbia University is not anymore housing the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. 160 or so of us gathered outside for the last picture. But we are still standing as a group, strong and determined, doing the same work and more great things into the future. Keep your eyes on us!

Full sympathy for brillant climate scientists at NASA/GISS, literally expelled from their building. I still remember the depth of stimulating scientific discussions during my 1997 visit.

The 80-year recipe stoking America’s Prosperity:

1) Free-market capital investments in brilliant ideas…
2) enabled by Engineering Innovations…
3) based on Science Research in Universities…
4) funded by Grants from the US Government.

It’s time more people understood this.

One of my favorite websites is the 2m temperature anomaly at climate reanalyzer. I’ve found memory is just short enough that people do not quite remember what a given day (eg May 13th) should feel like, so we do not recognize warming in transitional seasons. climatereanalyzer.org/wx/todays-we...

Achieving similar (or greater?) crop yield with less mineral fertiliser and pesticides? this new paper proposes a useful framework – with examples - to quantify the contribution of ecosystem services.

In a new paper, we propose the 'ecological yield gap' as a framework to strengthen collaboration between agronomists and ecologists in our quest to enhance on-farm ecosystem services in ways that effectively sustain crop yields while minimising input use:

Narrowing the ecological yield gap to sustain crop yields with less inputs

Museum and Planetarium Friends,

Many of you use NASA SVS material. Right now it is critical that we are able to document SVS's impact.

Please let us know how you are using our content (use my email address at the bottom of this page: svs.gsfc.nasa.gov).

Thank you!

Important perspective on food systems risks given accumulating and overlapping present day challenges. Without coordinated planning, individual responses may trip all over each other

1. I've been banging on about the existential crisis facing our food system for years. But don't take it from me. Take it from the food professionals now risking their careers in an urgent and devastating warning to their own industry. Key quotes from their memo in 🧵 drive.google.com/file/d/1tATF...

This is figure 1, which shows the lowest global warming level that would push current crop production into considerable risk.
