Re: Greenland, sacrificing soft power you can use to control the whole world for some land you already have access to is the work of meme-addled morons. That they think it will politically benefit them for the midterms is an extra layer of stupid

One species of doomer sentiment is "Public opinion doesn't matter" except that one person who clearly cares about it a lot is Trump himself, if only because to him it's a form of TV ratings. It clearly motivates many of his actions, people just assume it doesn't because the actions are maladroit lol

He thinks he is! That's what all the hamfisted policy announcements are about. We're gonna cap credit card rates. We're gonna steal oil from another country to make gas cheaper. This is all just a more elaborate version of the PR scams he's done his whole life
I don't think that's true. If he cared about public opinion, he'd do more popular things.

Man Charged With Shining Laser Pointer At Trump’s Helicopter Acquitted In 35 Minutes
It's another embarrassing outcome for Jeanine Pirro, who tried to "make a felon out of a homeless man with nothing but a cat toy keychain."

it is funny how many people affiliated with the secret police have had to say "stop making fun of the secret police, the guy in the tac vest that covers him like a training bra is a hero, he tracked down and subdued two hospice orderlies using only the W-2 forms they file annually"

“Let me get this straight: You’re worried about China and Russia seizing territory that’s covered by a legally binding mutual defense pact with multiple nuclear powers including your country, and so your plan is to illegally tax your own citizens.”

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Iconic imo

ICE seems to get completely flummoxed when they’re being yelled at by white men over 35. They kind of put their heads down and shuffle their feet. It’s like their kryptonite.

Seizure ... by whom? If we're asserting that the money is safer in Qatar than the US, that suggests that it is being protected because Qatar has something the US lacks — presumably a lack of accountability to American courts and Congress. www.semafor.com/article/01/1...

Big GITMO/war on terror vibes from the hypertechnical nature of this opinion.

And the Trump and Bush judges who wrote it, and chose to not attach their names to it, completely fail to grapple with the lawless and harmful campaign behind these chilling arrests.
The import of this ruling: Foreign citizens in the United States—including green card holders—can be arrested for political speech and imprisoned for months or even years before being given a meaningful opportunity to challenge the constitutionality of their arrest and imprisonment.

Photo by Pierre Lavie. Yes this is me. And I threw my Leica. It landed on the bass plate with hardly a scratch. Another Photographer grabbed it along with my phone and I was able to track him later. I was held face down tear gas deployed right in front of me and pepper sprayed directly into the eye.

"this is not who we are" is 90% of the time a normative statement of aspiration, it's not an empirical claim of "these events have never taken place in this country before". one of the most obnoxious genres of "actually..." is reacting like it's the latter when it's clearly the former.
