What's a citizen-initiated petition? If Taylor (and friends) can gather the signatures of roughly 177,000 Alberta voters in a 120-day period, and Elections AB verifies them, a govt committee must then prepare a report on the proposal or send it back to Exns AB for a referendum vote. #AbEd

Elections Alberta has approved a citizen-initiated petition application to gather signatures in support of the proposal to end public funding to independent/private schools.

Calgary teacher Alicia Taylor says she brought it forward because it could help improve funding for public schools. #AbEd

WOW!

Alberta just got another approved referendum petition!

And this one calls for the practice of funding private schools with public money to be put to an end!

During the teachers strike!

Strap in Alberta, we’re going on a ride!

Why does the Alberta government think they need to remove insurance company premium caps? We have already had the country’s highest rate increases over the last five years.

In a year when Calgary’s alone student count rose by 8000, the budget for Public Ed was not increased.
However, the UCP gave private & charter schools $418M.
Now, the UCP are also funding 12 new builds for private & charters as well.
The UCP are defunding Public Education in Alberta.

Excellent work @smartalecw.bsky.social !!
For the ATA's substitute teacher conference in October, I made 128 copies to hand out of my first 'zine (which I glibly called propaganda); all about the association and how/why subs should be involved. I'm really proud of it. #ABEd

And if you think other Con premiers won’t pull an Alberta “AimCo” move to take over public pensions, do I have a bridge to sell you!

This need to keep our already low property taxes low comes at a cost. For some perspective, we still pay less for property taxes than when we lived in Grande Prairie 15 years ago!!
In 2019, Calgary city council cut $60M from the city's operating budget in response to a tax revolt from business owners. Five years later, city hall is about to close Inglewood's pool as a result. "A cautionary tale," says one councillor. www.sprawlcalgary.com/calgary-prop... #yyccc #calgary #yyc
