Our ability to comprehend daily events has been corrupted by a toxic info environment where political & attentional dynamics distort & manipulate our “collective sensemaking” processes. Our “official” sources are now products of that same environment. Reality fractures, along with the social fabric.

Call me crazy but I think the Librarian of Congress should be an actual librarian. And Carla Hayden was the best, she should still have the job.

NEW: ALA salutes Dr Carla Hayden for her exceptional service to the nation as the Librarian of Congress. We are deeply disappointed in Dr Hayden's abrupt & unjust dismissal last night, an insult to the scope & breadth of her work.

Better yet, here's your reminder that libraries are political. They are not non-political. They are political because they have to be pro-library.

BE POLITICAL.

You are political effing institutions.

What you aren't is PARTISAN. You are politically pro whatever is pro-library.
Hey everybody, put the word "DOGE" or at least "federal" in your service disruption announcements!

Identifying the specific source of your funding or its termination is not an impermissible political statement from a govt agency or nonprofit, it's responsible comms for your users/constituencies

ALA is deeply concerned by reports that IMLS is sending notices to libraries claiming to cancel grants that are required by law. This harmful action will disrupt libraries' ability to serve their communities.

The library and the post office are the only two systems we have that circulate things widely and to everyone, no matter who they are or what they believe. The library is the only one that, for now, is not forced to pay for itself at point of sale. Attacks on IMLS are attacks on every one of us.

If libraries don’t care about books and reading, how do we expect our communities to?

We need to rethink phrases like “more than just books” and what kind of message that sends. When we say “just books”, are we inadvertently sending negative messaging about the value of books?
