Enough of acting the infant who has been told so often how he was found under a cabbage leaf that in the end he remembers the exact spot in the garden and the kind of life he led there before joining the family circle.

In the forest is a monster
It has done terrible things
So in the wood it's hiding
And this is the song it sings
Who will love me now? Who will ever love me?

One day I will write about my lives with PJ's phenomenal music. 🖤

Just in time to kick off your October, we have another interview from an author-translator duo longlisted for the NBA for Translated Literature! We spoke to Vincenzo Latronico and Sophie Hughes, author and translator of PERFECTION. Read it here: wordswithoutborders.org/read/article...
Alt: Black background, white text, circular author photos of Vincenzo Latronico and Sophie Hughes, and the cover of PERFECTION to the far right of the image. Book cover has a white border, and a picture of three lily’s sticking out of a plastic San Pellegrino bottle. At the top is the NBF logo reading “76th National Book Awards,” and below it is “Words Without Borders.” The text is as follows:

National Book Award Interviews: Vincenzo Latronico and Sophie Hughes on Perfection

“As a translator, I know that the work allows you to access a text with much more depth and perception than a reader, an editor, the writer themself: sometimes you write a sentence as it comes and decide it’s good, but as a translator you have to assume there is a choice behind every word.”— Vincenzo Latronico

Very lucky to have a poem from my “Guide to Interpreting Dreams” series in the finale issue of Gigantic Sequins, alongside a stunner by @msstefaniekirby.bsky.social
Guide to Interpreting Dreams V
FRANCES KLEIN
You demand soup.
You crumple saltines over my bowl just the way I don't like it. At the magpie's rattle, you send me to tend to our child. Claws scratch my arms as I lift him from the cradle; I stoop for a kiss, and my mouth fills with beak. Outside, the sky is end-days yellow, and you answer each plea with a turned back. We have had the frogs and the hail. We have sprayed blood from the patio furniture, our bodies anointed with ointments for the lice and boils.
When the long darkness breaks, I know what comes next— but you hunch over your soup, unmoved. In the crib, silence where there should be song. A list from the back of the issue showing Stefanie Kirby and Frances Klein

It’s come to my attention that some of you don’t know/forgot that Bari Weiss dated Kate McKinnon. This is a crucial element of her lore.

And that's why GDP is an absolute bullshit metric for gauging the "prosperity" of an economic system. GDP measures how well the billionaires are doing, and it ignores what AI costs the average resident or their communities. Fuck billionaires. Fuck AI. And fuck GDP.

We need a universal income ASAP

"The hundreds of billions of dollars companies are investing in AI now account for an astonishing 40 per cent share of US GDP growth this year... In a way, then, America has become one big bet on AI."
America is now one big bet on AI
It’s seen as the magic fix for every threat to the US economy

The thing I love about European men is that they’re either dressed for a runway show or for space travel. There is no in-between.

I read it more as peak New Narrative xperiment in living, and a wonderful companion to Robert Gluck's JACK THE MODERNIST, forthcoming from NYRB? Per imagining a future that emerges in "blab" & co-creation of language for present. A space made space for radical queering. Which is so timely.

There is no middle ground.
There is our empty bench.
There is the stoop of pigeons.
Either I have been alone
Every hour of my life or
Never once, not even
One moment, and the mist rising.

Be with me now as I
Feel my way among
Misted pillars and ghosts
Of breath on upper Broadway.
A quick kiss in the crosswalk is
More to me than mankind.

Click does the trick. You find my words dark. Darkness is in our souls, do you not think? Flutier. Our souls, shamewounded by our sins, cling to us yet more, a woman to her lover clinging, the more the more.
