In 1998, at my first magazine job, I used to pay writers by the column inch with a wooden ruler.

25 years later, Still writing, editing and publishing. 6 books in. 7th on fhe way, collabaration with husband @shanepaulneil

From Illtown, New Juru
I co-sign all of this. Except, as a general rule, you did need to show and not tell.
Time to make people angry again!

- It’s okay if you don’t write every day
- First drafts don’t have to be crap
- You don’t have to outline
- You don’t have to use beta readers
- Sometimes telling instead of showing is fine

Fuck all the writing “rules” they tell you about. There are no rules.

It’s why I am here. 25 years in media. Ask me anything.

This happened in music journalism many years ago.
"It might be time for sports journalists to start rethinking their norms and practices. They may not have much of a choice."

@bmoritz99.bsky.social on the need for innovative approaches to sports reporting:
Sports journalists break away from access-based journalism
"2025 will be the year when sports journalists start to really reckon with the fact that teams and players don’t need them anymore."

I’m stuck on “rizz”
The older I get the more often I have to look up current slang in order to know what the hell is being discussed.

Does anyone ever get this feeling of deep and pure joy in this place? Sometimes I log off so I can come back and get all excited again.

It takes a lot of effort (and money and meds and insurance and a therapist) to get me to happy.

All I have to do to be miserable is lose anyone of those things
My thought for this Tuesday ☕️☕️☕️

What I hate the most? They get the Thing for you and they say, "I'll put that at the register for you."

I can't HOLD IT IN MY HAND until I've paid for it? Just in case I make a habit of waiting for deodorant, having someone give It to me--And THEN making a break for it.
Seems like people wanna talk about all the locked-up stuff at chain pharmacies and big box stores today. Here’s a gift link to a feature I published a few months ago about why retailers started putting so much stuff behind plexiglass and how badly it’s backfired. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
Retailers Locked Up Their Products—and Broke Shopping in America
CVS, Target and other chains have barricaded everything from toiletries to cleaning supplies. It’s backfired in almost every way.

This article cites the end of the pandemic as why goods were locked up.

I've been buying deodorant and Tide behind locked glass for at least twenty years.

I’m afraid to get too close to it! It’s got sensors!
I am 35 years old and STILL deeply terrified that consuming anything from the hotel room minibar will bankrupt my entire family somehow

Can’t figure out how to upload banner. Ask
Husband. He goes to my profile. On the far right is a teeny tiny camera icon to upload. I was about to throw this phone. Alas, this is 50.

Which is why the mic ratings at The Source became so critical. EVERY artist cared. Every.
Going that hard against their own kinda k*lls all that Afrocentrism they were rapping about before 🤷🏽‍♀️

Artists tolerated criticism from white pubs/expected hagiography elsewhere.
The way De La Soul attacked Marcus about his biography on them disheartens me but also makes me relieved that I expanded my journalism into more than music.

I am sitting here shaking back and forth, unable to rank.
Vibe magazine was the best hiphop magazine ever.

The Source was 2nd.

Not sure of the time frame but The Source had one too.
📺 August 4, 1997: Two syndicated late night talk shows debuted: “The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show” and “Vibe,” which was based on the magazine of the same name. Both tried to fill the void left by Arsenio Hall who departed his successful late night show three years prior but both… http://dlvr.it/TBVGc6

I saw Gwyneth Paltrow barefoot in denim cutoffs in Avengers. It was definitely a choice. Who in their right mind would walk around that place barefoot?
It's funny because in commercials and magazine photoshoots everyone is barefoot because it communicates safety and comfort and cleanliness and sometimes an almost hedonist vibe. I see a lot of people shoeless in movies and TV now, possibly because of a social shift too

What's a book—or series of books—that you loved as a kid that almost nobody seems to read or even remember nowadays?

Stop saying/writing “arguably.” It’s just a way to weasel out of saying the actual controversial take.

So, if you say XYZ rapper is arguably the best rapper ever.

What do YOU think? I’m reading your words not two people having an argument. Is he or isnt he? If you truly don’t know. Say that.

I wouldn’t say it’s gone that far quite yet. I would be interested in seeing if he could sell out MSG tomorrow.
Drake’s career being immolated by Kendrick has now surpassed 50 Cent’s destruction of Ja Rule’s career.

We witnessed hip hop history.

Can you just wait until you’re not busy to post?

Not citing a source because you’re busy and telling the reader to look it up. That’s not how stating facts works at all.
When I post something, it's facts

Ask anyone on here

Sometimes, I can't post the actual articles because I'm BUSY

If you can't google a source, don't ask me to do the leg work for you

And if you type to me "source?" I'm calling your ass out
