I had the best time getting ✨multilingual✨ in R and Python at the Summer School for Women* in Political Methodology 🤗

Couldn’t ask for a more supportive group; very important when several hours of live-coding is involved 🙈

So many things to love about this NYC result, from the policy possibilities it creates and generational change it delivers to the rebuttal of the naked and cynical Islamophobia Mamdani's opponents tried to stir up and the schadenfruede over dirtbag Cuomo's big sad. Today, I❤️NY!!

As a little sneak peek into what you can expect tomorrow, check out this note by @williamlallen.bsky.social!

As early-career colleagues start thinking about autumn job applications, I wrote a piece describing my post-PhD path. Reflecting on "project," "person," and "place" with mentors helped me immensely, so I hope this note pays it forward somehow. www.wlallen.com/wp-content/u...
Three overlapping circles with the words project, person, and place inside each of them.

We look forward to this very important conversation, and to seeing you there! 🎉

We convened a panel of participants who bring diverse perspectives on this topic across career stages and institutional experience: @kenbenoit.bsky.social (Singapore Management University), @shubhakprasad.bsky.social (Hertie), @henryhenryhenry.com (UZH), and
@williamlallen.bsky.social (Southampton).

In this roundtable, we'll discuss the application process, the institutional dynamics that come with this career transition, and professional development beyond landing the first job. We designed this discussion with both early career researchers and the faculty who support them in mind.

If you are attending #EPSA2025 and interested in uncovering the black box that is the postdoctoral job market, you're in luck! Marta Antonetti (LSE) and I will be hosting a roundtable on Thursday at 13:10 dedicated to the topic. 🧵👇

I was preparing to pitch an op-ed on the nationwide protests calling for President Yoon's resignation, aiming to provide global context amid the limited international coverage.

Given the urgency, I’m sharing it now. I didn’t expect events to escalate this quickly. #SouthKorea #Democracy

It is not normal to absorb this much info about extreme violence. It is not normal to constantly think that only by pure chance, you could have been subjected to the same. I feel like something is eroding in our humanity, because we numb our feelings to deal with the terrible reality we live in

The utter stress of living in Germany these days I swear. On the bright side (other foreign) friends who were previously less outspoken on Palestine are becoming radicalized.

i am less convinced that AI is going to replace jobs than i am that companies are going to cut jobs on the premise of AI replacing them and then hire those people back as contractors for less money and fewer protections, because that’s what’s happened a *lot* in the last 20 years.

It might mean the end of a lot of jobs potentially and the fear is that it might become harder and harder to find new places to land.

Palestinian scholar @danaelkurd.bsky.social learned of the 10/7 attacks while visiting the Jewish Museum of Berlin. She reflects:

“A reconsideration of the nation-state as the sole source of safety, as well as the notion of a state-based sovereignty, is essential.”

newlinesmag.com/first-person...
Text: “The world’s solution to safety and security, for Jews and for others, continues to be inextricably linked to the nation-state and its sovereignty — to militarized borders and an obsession with demography. As modern history has shown, such an idea always has the potential for exclusionary politics and mass violence. Perhaps most damaging of all is how such a solution propagates a diminished understanding of safety: It is the state that needs defending, not people. It is the state that holds sovereignty, not people. This logically leads to policies that label certain elements of society acceptable losses in times of conflict — sacrifices in the name of the state. And it facilitates an essentialist view of the world that cannot include the history of human migration and leaves no room for the fluidity of identity.” Text: “A reconsideration of the nation-state as the sole source of safety, as well as the notion of a state-based sovereignty, is essential. It is people who have sovereignty: People have the right to a dignified life, to self-determination, to control of their environment and a say in their future. And people can only be safe collectively by ensuring those around them are also safe. States are the way we organize our world, and they can provide forms of safety, but often narrowly, fleetingly and by denying safety to others. A state that continues to deny sovereignty cannot sustain safety. In the name of sovereignty and safety, it will continue to cause violence. And a garrison can only protect for so long.”
