Fern Harvey’s fab poster presentation of her systematic review on process evaluations for complex intervention trials. Better reporting of context, mechanisms of action and fidelity would enable greater learning about successful interventions #ImpSci #EIE2025 @au-primarycareuol.bsky.social

A cluster randomised crossover design incorporates the principles of both cluster trials (where groups of individuals eg wards, schools etc are randomly assigned) and crossover trials where, in this case, the clusters cross over to different treatment/s for set time periods 2/7

At #CCR25, we saw some trials use a #CompositeOutcome (an endpoint that combines more than one outcome into a single measure) & also saw some of the problems these can throw up. I have discussed these before but thought it would be useful to revisit 1/9

A common issue in trials is how to accommodate multiple important outcomes. Approaches include composite outcomes or using the win ratio method (I have posted on these before). A newer method is the #DOOR (Desirability of Outcome Ranking) approach 1/7

Currently low response rates from CTU Directors (n=5), Programmers/Data Managers (n=0), & QA Managers (n=3) working in clinical trials. We need to know what these groups think the challenges are for greener trials.

FReSH START is a research project aiming to develop a therapy intervention for adults who self-harm. We are now running a clinical trial to see if the therapy we developed is effective and if it improves people's quality of life. #introduction #mentalhealthresearch #selfharm #NIHR

Interesting historical principles of clinical trial conduct … Rule 5 “the medical statistician has to be competent” … sure hope we’ve got that one sorted!

An issue that often comes up is how to set a “non-inferiority margin” in a non-inferiority trial and how to ensure it is appropriate 1/8

We've frustratingly allowed "real world" to become a deceptive synonym for "observations we happened haphazardly to make". I'd say half the studies that come to me now, the majority of which are useful but modest clinical audits, will have "real world" in the proposal title. It's magic!

I am not that surprised that more women quit academic publishing than men- this chimes with data showing fewer women get their papers published, grants funded if they lead them and that more women get pushed into support roles. We do need to do more to support and mentor female staff. 🧪
Who’s quitting academia? Data reveal gender gaps in surprising fields
Even in scientific areas in which women are well represented, they are up to 40% more likely than men to leave research within 20 years.
