This is a nice paper. It faces down a common problem: in order to explain to why a common approach cannot work even in theory, we first need to teach a framework in which regression is not magic that tells us which variables on right cause the variable on left. It's exhausting.

Anyway great paper!

🫣 Profits are for wimps. Revenues are for losers. Ideas sell, not fundamentals

Over half the Nasdaq market is loss making. About 1-in-8 companies have no revenues

There are a lot more in these camps than in the past

Labour aren't appeasing Reform. Labour are full to the brim with conservative, career-politicians that actually want these policies. Or that's what I think anyway.

The NHS and social care would cease to function under UK govt’s new rules on foreign staff.

Workers will have to wait – from 5 to 10 years – before they can apply for indefinite leave to remain, claim any benefit, childcare, or housing support, despite paying taxes

Obviously not the main point here, but it's interesting how this is framed as content rather than policy.

"BREAKING" is typically what journalists or influencers say when they have a big story -- not what government officials say when they launch "undercover" operations

I know statistics are poorly understood and are misused. But facts matter

Between the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them

Yet we still have social media "experts" from academic organizations insisting we must stay on twitter because it has more users. To be honest, most academic organizations will also fail to get much out of bluesky, & should focus efforts on LinkedIn. Bsky best for developing personal peer networks

Bluesky vs. X engagement comparisons tell familiar story.

Example: My colleague @johngramlich.bsky.social has similar # of followers on each site. Last week, he had a popular post about sports gambling, a topic of interest across political ideology.

X: 59 retweets
B: 1,234 total reposts

RFK Jr, & the 5 MAHA/MAGA MDs & PhDs who he has charged to do his bidding (Drs Bhattacharya, Makary, Kulldorff, Oz & Prasad), are joyfully dismantling the US vaccine system brick by brick while spending much time on right wing podcasts & Fox News being anti-vaxx celebrities living their best lives 😔

A life update: this wound up paying off. I'm still applying to several jobs that are hopefully careers, but I've got my survival needs covered by a job at the airport that I'm apparently pretty good at.

And instead of being in an office alone, which was driving me mad, I see 20k people a day.

There is a line around this building to get to the line entrance to wait to get into this job fair.

And we have even less protection here. Trump can't fire judges who have constitutional protection. A government here could pass a law allowing them to do so with a majority of one in the Commons.

If you can't see how this will end, then you're not paying attention (not least to what's going on on the other side of the Atlantic).
