A source stationed in Germany has sent me emails showing the principal at a Department of Defense school, Weisbaden Middle, telling teachers they can no longer allow books to be checked out until someone has reviewed them for compliance with Trump’s anti-trans, anti-diversity ex orders.

This is no small thing:
Banned childrens book from DOD school libraries. Book is about a small 7yr old who eventually embraxes her freckles. She learns how to embrace her differences. (It reflects Julianna Moores experience as a student in a DOD school)

This is where we are now: An elementary school at Fort Campbell has removed all books from its library that so much as *allude* to slavery or the civil rights movement.

The wholesale erasure of history in real time.
Books mentioning slavery, civil rights removed from shelves at Fort Campbell schools - ClarksvilleNow.com
At an elementary school at Fort Campbell, home of the 101st Airborne Division, librarians are hard at work scrubbing the shelves for books that contain references to slavery, the civil rights movement...

🧵 If you’re applauding the abolishment of the Department of Education, you need to do a little research. You have ZERO clue what the DOE actually does.

Here’s a reality check on what the Department of Education actually does:

Public education should not be a partisan issue. I have been teaching children for 27 years from a wide range of backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, and incomes. Everyone should want children to learn.

So proud of our Democratic members of Congress, right now! They’re being blocked from the Dept. of Education—and they’re not having it.

Seeing Auntie Maxine ready to fight for our kids warms my soul. She hasn’t changed. Waters isn’t my congresswoman, but we love her in this house!

Title 1 Reading Specialist here trying not to panic. Will my job still be here next year? What will happen to my kids if my role is eliminated? Teaching is hard enough without the sense of dread about the future.

Curriculum is set at the state and local level and they have zero way to enforce this bullshit. Not with funding. Not with tests. Nada.

I read the term “word blindness” in a book and had to look up what it meant. I’ve been teaching 27 years and was a bit embarrassed that I didn’t know a literacy term. I learned it’s an old term for dyslexia. Hmm…still learning! #EduSkyPrimary 📚🍎

One of my favorite holiday traditions is my daughter making our family’s Christmas card. ♥️ She’s made one every year since she was 13 and she’s now in Art School. 🎄

I’m planning a dream trip to the UK next summer. Which gardens should I visit?
I’ll be in London and Oxford.

My son’s district switched to Fundations (a science of reading based curriculum) this year. I was asking him how class was going and he said:

I hate it. We used to read books and novels and now all we do is talk about what sounds letters make. I just want to have fun reading.

Every time I read about banning books, I think of this:

Reading a book with a gay character will not make you gay any more than reading a book about Einstein will make you a genius.
If you're afraid that books might change someone's thinking, you're not afraid of books — you're afraid of thinking.

We need to keep talking about how weird it is for people to think they should have a say in reading choices for anyone's kids but their own. You're not in charge of what other people's children eat or wear or when they go to bed. Why on earth would you get to choose what they read?
