I spent 4 terms in local gov focused on climate action, reconciliation, social justice & a stronger democracy. I left in 2018 to figure out why Trump got elected. Now I teach power literacy & help courageous people take action on bold, progressive ideas.

BREAKING: President Trump issued a memo calling for government-wide "terrorism investigations" into political opponents.

His administration is trying to use political violence as an excuse to investigate and intimidate the president's perceived enemies.

In the long fight to compel governments to action, today is a big day. Giant congrats to the big team that has spent over six years pursuing this landmark ruling. The substance matters: the hope and energy it is mobilizing matters even more.

Wow so you’re telling me everyone who cheered on the Iraq war is on board with this now too? And so are the people who opposed the Iran nuclear deal and killed it?

You’re kidding.

I just like to post these data from time to time to puncture the mythological aura of mid 20th c protests. They were less popular than pretty much any 21st c mass action & people criticizing them used the same lines. Protest is about people coming together, shaping narratives, & building power.
Polling data from Harris & Associates 1966.

🚨 An important read

Ultimately this results in a crisis for all but the most wealthy of Canadians. When 35% of us are living in a crisis, it’s impossible for us to have a healthy, prosperous society. So many are just trying to survive, and that extends into the owners who over-leveraged to try and achieve secure tenure
andreareimer.bsky.social
It’s true - it could be taken many ways. What I meant was that the majority of Canadians own their own home and the higher rents and prices go, the more wealth that majority achieve. Those of us who don’t own just keep paying more and more to provide that increasing wealth to owners.

The motivation is particularly important from my perspective. The housing crisis is not a crisis for many in Canada: it’s a housing windfall. Without people in government personally motivated to help those of us for whom it’s a crisis, things will not change IMO.
andreareimer.bsky.social
I do think that time of trying so hard to solve a problem with none of the tools he needed to do it makes him uniquely qualified - and more important motivated - to do the level of work needed to make a difference on what is now a global crisis.

I appreciate the engagement. As a lifelong renter in the same position I can’t see the case for blaming one mayor for a national crisis, particularly the mayor who was the only 1 of 3 levels of government taking the problem seriously as housing went from problem to crisis across the country.

Lots to like in this cabinet. On the issues that I’m passionate about it’s great to see equally passionate and experienced folks like Gregor Robertson, Julie Dabrusin, Mandy Gull-Masty, Rebeccas Alty & Chartrand, Buckley Belanger. Also great to see WAGE restored with Rechie Valdez at the helm.
