For the record, I write a women’s basketball newsletter every weekday that very much has editors, and have worked as a freelance editor for another college hoops newsletter that, clearly, also has editors. So all you’ve really told me here is YOU don’t pay an editor for your newsletter lol

There are no bad players on Dawn Staley’s roster, but she’s clearly struggling to figure out who can give her good minutes off the bench. South Carolina #NCAAWBB reserves have been outscored 53-19 by their three toughest opponents (USC, Duke and Texas). Could definitely use Kitts and/or Watkins.

The Gamecocks' five-player bench was outscored 17-2 last night after being outdone 22-11 by Duke on Wednesday and 14-6 by USC for a cumulative mark of 53-19 against opponents in the top-50 in HHS rating so far. In fairness to South Carolina, two of those games were wins by double-digit margins, but I still think the absences of Chloe Kitts and Ashlyn Watkins are going to haunt this team against its fellow national championship hopefuls. It certainly would've been helpful to have either Kitts or Watkins yesterday when Joyce Edwards had to deal with foul trouble and Madina Okot fouled out with 1:52 to play (after three fouls in 37 seconds). The Gamecocks' depth issues up front were also evident in Texas' 39-32 edge on the boards and 46% offensive rebounding rate (16 offensive boards on 35 missed field-goal attempts). South Carolina's next opponent, Louisville on December 4, doesn't look like a national title contender but is firmly within the top-50 in HHS rating.

Rori Harmon played all 80 possible minutes in Las Vegas to earn her giant MVP ring while Madison Booker and Jordan Lee each played 79 of 80. Rori might be a bit further down the scoring list, but that trio is the heart of a team that can win a #NCAAWBB natty.

That troika played 238 of a possible 240 minutes in Las Vegas. You gotta hand it to South Carolina and Texas #NCAAWBB for finding a very roundabout way of celebrating the 20th anniversary of the last time they were together on Thanksgiving.

Still, I can't rule out the possibility that they shared some Bahamian turkey and stuffing on the eve of the Longhorns' 59-55 Black Friday win over the Gamecocks in the 2005 Junkanoo Jam. It's fitting that the Gamecocks and Longhorns will spend the holiday together, whether it's a 20-year anniversary celebration or not, because they've probably spent as much time together in 2025 as they have with their families. South Carolina enters its fifth meeting with Texas this calendar year having gotten the best of this newfound sibling SEC rivalry so far with wins in three of the four clashes last season. Those Gamecocks wins were all by either 17 or 19 points and included triumphs in the finals of the SEC Tournament and the Final Four. Texas' four-point home win in February was its first one against the Gamecocks since that Bahamian Black Friday 20 years ago, as South Carolina has won four of five since Dawn Staley took over in 2008 and leads the series 5-3 all- time.

I also thought Friday was an important night in the evolution of this UConn team, which probably won’t play a worse quarter all season than that 3rd quarter, but seemed to find its identity in the 4th. Sarah Strong is their unicorn, but when push comes to shove it’s Azzi’s team for now. #NCAAWBB
Tulin’s Treasures newsletter screenshot Text: I don't feel like I've buried the lede with ~600 words on Michigan before addressing top-ranked and victorious UConn, but let me finally give well-earned props to the reigning national champions. It's not an exaggeration to say the Huskies might well not play a worse quarter this season than the third quarter on Friday night — they're not on the wrong end of an 18-4 quarter very often — and they responded to that first punch in the mouth by finding a way to hold on and push their win streak to 21 games. This being UConn, it's still a dozen games from entering the program's all-time top-10, but this is the Huskies' longest streak since starting 36-0 in 2017-18, and it could last a while longer. I've made no secret of my immense Sarah Strong fandom, but it was senior Azzi Fudd who led UConn with 31 points on Friday and has since surpassed Strong as the team leader in points per game (21.0 to 18.8). Strong still leads UConn in rebounds (9.8), assists (five), steals (three) and blocks (2.7) per game, but the second half on Friday seemed to signal an important turning point for Fudd and UConn, just as I believe it did for Michigan. There was never a doubt this Huskies team could rise to the occasion, but it did seem that when things went sideways, it reverted to a mode that Geno Auriemma has bemoaned over the years in which a roster full of stars waited for Paige Bueckers to save the day. I can't tell you what Auriemma said to Fudd in between the third quarter (in which she had no points, two turnovers and went 0-for-3 from the field without a trip to the line) and the fourth quarter (in which she had 13 points on 3-for-6 from the field, 3-for-5 from deep and 4-for-4 at the line), or if he said anything at all. What I can tell you is that Fudd responded like the message was, "you're Paige Bueckers now." How long Fudd has to play the role of Bueckers might ultimately be up to the Dallas Wings after they won the No. 1 pick in the next WNBA draft last night, but Fudd certainly looked the part for 10 minutes on Friday.

Swords' three 3-pointers in the final 49 seconds kept Michigan's hopes alive to the bitter end. She hasn't scored more than 15 points in any other game this season and scored only six points in Michigan's win over Syracuse to wrap up the weekend, but Friday night was the only time Michigan has needed her to be at her best so far. Swords was more than up to the task. That's been the trend in her career. It could be a red flag that Swords' four highest-scoring games in a Michigan uniform have all come in losses, except that the games were at a neutral site against South Carolina to open her career (27 points), at UCLA on New Year's Day (30), against USC in last season's Big Ten Tournament (26) and Friday in a pseudo-road game against UConn. Three of those were AP No. 1-ranked opponents and all of them were scenarios where Michigan was a big underdog and turned to Swords for exactly the heroics she delivered.

Since Andraya was just gushing about Sarah Strong, lemme just add, from today’s newsletter, that she leads UConn in EVERYTHING, because she is RIDICULOUS #NCAAWBB

That's not an exaggeration, at least as far as the five main "box score" stats are concerned. Strong tops the Huskies in points (20.5), rebounds (8.8), assists (five), steals (3.3) and blocks (2.5) per game. She's also the team leader in field-goal percentage (61.1%) among those with more than three attempts. It's impressive enough when a player leads a bad team in everything, and it's very early, but it's still pretty silly to see a sophomore doing it for a team that has a likely top-two pick in the next WNBA draft in Azzi Fudd off to her own fantastic start (17.8 ppg, 4.5 apg, 2.5 spg, 46.2% from deep) amid a boatload of other options.

It’s been a minute since Iowa and Baylor played, and the last time it happened there was a 2019 Final Four berth at stake (Baylor would go on to win the #NCAAWBB natty). Not quite the same stakes tonight, but Baylor can secure multiple top-20 wins in November for the first time since 2016.

The Bears opened the season with a 58-52 win over then-No. 7 Duke (15th in HHS rating) in Paris, and with a win over No. 19 Iowa tonight they'll have multiple top-20 wins in November for the first time since the 2016-17 season (when they had three). Taliah Scott leads the way averaging 24.5 points per game and is second on the team averaging five assists per game. She has scored at least 22 points in all four of her games as a Bear but is coming off of her lowest-scoring outing and first one without a make from deep (0-for-3) against Le Moyne. She'd made 10-of-26 (38.5%) from beyond the arc over the first three games, hitting multiple triples in each. Darianna Littlepage-Buggs (12.5 points, 9.8 rebounds per game) scored a team-high 26 points against Le Moyne, two more than she'd put up over the season's first three games, while going 12-for-13 (92.3%) from the field.

I did not like to think about it just as later I would not like to think about the worm in his brain that other people found so funny. I loved his brain. I hated the idea of an intruder therein. Others thought he was a madman; he was not quite mad the way they thought, but I loved the private ways that he was mad. I loved that he was insatiable in all ways, as if he would swallow up the whole world just to know it better if he could. He made me laugh, but I winced when he joked about the worm. "Baby, don't worry," he said. "It's not a worm." A doctor he trusted had reviewed the scans of his brain obtained by The New York Times, he said, and concluded that the shadowy figure was likely not a parasite at all. He sighed. It was too late to interfere with what had already vaulted from the sphere of meme to the sphere of screwy legend, but at least I did not have to worry about the worm that was not a worm in his brain.
